By Ciaran Duggan,
It has been a manic day of breaking news on official Star Wars Day and it doesn't stop here. Today, Mark Hamill has released a column in the reputed British press agency, The Sun. In his article, Hamill implores fans and, readers of The Sun, to donate funds to the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. The online article also features an exclusive interview of Mark Hamill, conducted by an editor of The Sun. Take a look at the Q&A interview below.
In typical Hamill style however, he reveals the existence of a revised scene of The Force Awakens, which was originally going to be the opening sequence of the film. Hamill disclosed this information, in response to a question about the difficulties of keeping things secret in the new world of social media.
Hamill: "When I first starting reading, I won't name the websites, you read the leaks and stuff, I'd say "That's rich. They're so wrong." Then one day, I read the first fifteen minutes absolutely accurately.
I can tell you now the original opening shot of Episode VII. The first thing that came into frame was a hand with a lightsaber...a severed hand....that enters the atmosphere and the hand burns away. Everything burns away and then the lightsaber goes sticking into the surface of Jakku, the planet that Rey lives on. And this alien hand comes in, I don't know if it was Maz, but it was an alien hand that comes in and then the movie proceeds as you see it."
Has Hamill confirmed the origin story of how Maz obtained possession of Luke's lighstaber? Why wasn't this scene shown in the Blu-Ray deleted scenes reel?
It wasn't the only revelation that Hamill imparted to the interview however. He did not discredit the possibility that Luke Skywalker will fight in a lightsaber duel in Episode VIII.
Interviewer: Do you still keep up your fencing skills for lightsaber fights?
Hamill: Again, I'm under an NDA, which is a non-dislosure agreement, but its possible.
As ever with a Mark Hamill interview, he will leave you with something compelling to think and talk about.
