By Ciaran Duggan,
Variety reported that Mark Hamill had been cast as "Luke Starkiller" in Star Wars: A New Hope.
The report had been made that the 23-year-old would make his film debut as Luke Starkiller, before the character's name would be changed to Luke Skywalker.
It wasn't until May 10, that the well known actor Harrison Ford would be announced to play Han Solo.
Mark Hamill spilled the beans on the name change at The Force Awakens European Premiere in 2015:
"Well I was originally named Luke Starkiller. We even filmed the scene "I'm Luke Starkiller and I'm here to rescue you".
Then I saw the scene on the call sheet a couple of weeks later and I said "Why aren't we shooting that scene" and they said "Oh, well you have had a name change. They don't want to have kill in your name."
I said "What's my new name" and they said "Luke Skywalker" and I said "Oh, thats awful! It sounds like Luke fly-squatter." I was used to Luke Starkiller and Starkiller has a little grit in and believe me Luke can use all the grit he can get."
There you have it. Who would have thought the name of such a legendary character could have been completely different?
Would you have preferred Luke to have been named Starkiller? Let us know in the comments below.
