Lucasfilm made a few more Star Wars Celebration Anaheim announcements today.  In addition to the news that Revenge of the Sith would be screened in 3D and that Star Wars: Smuggler's Bounty, the sequel to the audio play Smuggler's Gambit, would be recorded live at the convention, they announced the costume contest rules and set the pre-order date for  the Hoth Pin Set in the Pin Trading program.

The costume contest will be on Friday April 17th and costumes must be registered by February 28th.  Costume must be part of one of the five categories (listed below).  The winner from each category will be considered for the best in show prize.  Prizes and judges will be revealed closer to the convention.  The categories (and examples) are:
  • Jedi & Rebels: Luke Skywalker, Mace Windo, Ahsoka Tano, Hera Syndulla, Rebel Pilot
  • Empire & Sith: Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, Darth Maul, The Inquisitor, TIE Fighter Pilot
  • Princesses: Leia Organa, Padme Amidala, Duchess Satine Kryze
  • Armored Troopers: Stormtroopers, Mandalorian Mercs, Clone Troopers
  • Droids: R2-D2, C-3PO, GNK Droid, Chopper, Battle Droids
  • Aliens, Creatures & Outer Rim: Wampa, Ewok, Tuskan Raider, Gungan

As for the Pin Trading program, the Hoth Pin set will be available for pre-order starting January 9th (this Friday).  The Hoth set includes a Rebel Hoth Trooper and a Imperial Snowtrooper.  They can be pre-order through the Celebration website and are only available to Celebration ticket holders.

Star Wars Celebration Anaheim is already shaping up to be fantastic fan experience, and we don't even know what presence the new films will have!

Star Wars Celebration Anaheim will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California from April 16th-19th, 2015.  99 Days to go....

Star Wars Reads: Invasion from the Haran'galaar Clan.

By: Kat Kiele and Melinda Rain

The invasion in San Diego, California, was headed by the Haran'galaar (Hell Hawks), San Diego Clan for the Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club, along with the 501st Southern California Garrison, San Diego Squad. The two costuming groups were working together, bring smiles children's, adults, and even teenager's faces.

During my time in San Diego, I was able to get to know the local clan, a lot better along with have a voice interview with them, which should be featured on the next SWU (Star Wars Underworld) podcast.
According to Mr. Sebree, who goes by Eerbes Semaj on the Mercs forum, "I do these events because because it's fun to go around in an awesome looking costume and no one know it's you. The charities for the kids are fun and great, it's a good feeling you get when you see a smile on a kids face. And I did Star Wars Reads Day because it celebrates Star Wars as well as promoting reading which is a very important aspect of life. Star Wars books are what got me to really enjoy reading in the first place so I support it 100%."

For this Star Wars Reads day, we went to a comic book store, by the name of Comickaze. Don't mistake this for Stan Lee's Comic Convention, which it unaffiliated with this store. The owner, who was a kind gentleman was very open for the Mercs and 501st members to troop outside the comic book store. Not only were the Mercs able to bring a lot of attention to this store, they were able to bring smiles upon children's faces.

The kids in this picture were slightly scared of the Mandalorian Warrior, and the AT-AT driver. They finally warmed up to them after seeing that they were real people inside the plastic spaceman suits. Suiting up and having kids experience the excitement and fan-craziness is what the 501st and the Mercs are most well-known for.

Though that day was a fairly slow day for the Mandalorian Mercs Haran'galaar clan and the 501st Legion, San Diego Squad, it was very fulfilling to the smiles on the non-costumers faces.
In the near future, there shall be more events that I (Melinda) and Kat shall cover for them.
It has been a great experience to work with these amazing people, whom are a little bit crazy to dress up in plastic armor when it is 100 degrees Fahrenheit outside.

More photos from that event can be found on:

The SWU at Granite State Comic Con 2013

By Micaela Seekell

Today was the second and last day of the annual Granite State Comic Con in Manchester, New Hampshire. Although there was not any major Star Wars news being released the SWU staff were still keeping busy. Throughout the day we were able to get photos of some epic cosplayers from New England. In this article we'll show you the cool Star Wars cosplays. You can find photos of all the other sweet cosplays we came across HERE.

In the photo above we see non other than Jabba the Hut. The 501st brought this big green guy for people to take photos next to.

Here we see a zombie storm trooper and a brave little ewok.

These were very good cosplays of a scout trooper and Jaine Solo.

With a costum painted mask this Vader was very cool to look at.

It's not often you see a TIE pilot and a jawa together.

A great Asajj Ventress cosplay we ran into.

This father and daughter were having a great time cosplaying as Darth Vader and Padme.

A young padawan keeping the galaxy safe.

Didn't make it to this years Comic Con? The Granite State Comic Con will be back September 13th and 14th in 2014. Until next year GSCC, may the Force be with you!

Tom Hiddleston Traveled Incognito To Comic-Con As Jango Fett

By: Benjamin Hart

Most of you have probably seen Tom Hiddleston's epic presentation of the Thor: The Dark World trailer at San Diego Comic-Con this past week. What you most likely haven't heard about is how Tom secretly traveled to the convention dressed as Jango Fett. Yes, you read that right; Loki himself, from the Avengers, cosplayed as Bounty hunter Jango Fett on his way to Comic-Con. In an interview with Hero Complex, Hiddleston explains that he wanted to keep his appearance in San Diego extra secret:

"I knew that if I was seen in San Diego there would be a picture on Twitter or Instagram or Facebook, “I’ve just seen Thomas in the San Diego airport, I’ve just seen him in the hotel. He’s obviously here for ‘Thor 2.’”

When asked how he acquired the costume he said he had to go out and buy one. Hero Complex then asked why he chose Jango, and he replied:

"I’m 6 foot 2. It was the only one that fit in the costume shop. They were sold out of Stormtroopers."

And he denies doing it to catch the attention of Episode VII director J.J Abrams:

"...I was just like, no Marvel. If I come as Iron Man, it’s too obvious. But if J.J. wants to read it as a subtle message, I’m fine with that."

Be sure to read Hero Complex's full interview with Tom here!

The 501st Singapore Garrison Invades Pathlight Headquarters.

By Kat Kiele

The 501st Legion’s Singapore Garrison is in action, at Pathlight School.  This is the first autism-focused school in Singapore, teaching mainstream academic content and life-readiness skills to children from 7 to 18. The 501st Legion has been known for their charity efforts all around the world, along with being children-friendly. Today at Pathlight School, the 501st Legion’s Singapore Garrison was there in force, with 6 troopers and a smaller number of handlers. They posed with kids, teens, and adults alike, placing smiles on everyone's faces.
During my time there, I was able to chat with Dominic Zou, TR 7248, who is the CO (Commanding Officer) of the Singapore Garrison. He explains, "The 501st has always been here to place smiles on children's faces. This outing isn't our usual type of event, but one of those easier ones because we are just walking around and taking pictures. We also don't have as many handlers (who are people who watch out for the men and women in costume) as costumed troopers. We usually have one handler for every two costumed troopers. It is a security reason along with making sure that each trooper is hydrated and safe."
We have many reasons to recognize this amazing costuming group. Not only for their dedication for charity, but also for bringing smiles to children with facing illnesses or other challenges, or even just regular kids who love to see real-life Stormtroopers, clone troopers, or even bounty hunters. To many children, this could be a dream come true. Many of us Star Wars fans live in a world, where lightsabers are real, Han Solo shot first, and the Stormtroopers are the villains in the galaxy. In reality, the 501st aren't the villains, but the heroes from a dream, coming alive.
One of the 501st banners, featuring a Stormtrooper, member TK-9061, says, "I have defended Imperial Battle stations, occupied hostile systems, and learned the meaning of hope from a child with cancer."
That was one of many publicity items from the 501st Legion, which is one of the worldwide costuming organizations here to bring smiles upon children's faces.

According to Alfred Lim (Jango Fett), BH-7535, from the Singapore Garrison, "[The] Singapore Garrison is a part [of] the worldwide 501st Legion movement. It is a place where Star Wars fans can dress up as their favourite character (screen accurate) and appear for charity or community events. So we all gather for the love of Star Wars, charity, and bringing smiles to people around us."
BH-7535 is one of the costumers there at the invasion of Pathlight School.

Not only were the 501st at this event at Pathlight School, so were a few other costumers playing characters from unrelated universes. One character which I believe everyone will recognize is Thor. Come on... Thor just has to lighten up... just a bit... does everyone agree?

There were also some other exciting events, such as a Transformer (Optimus Prime) arresting a Stormtrooper, TK-8315. The caption: "Trooper, you are under arrest for consorting with the Decepticons. We are taking you back to the Headquarters, where you will be questioned about your loyalty. If you prove that you are really a Decepticon Spy, you will be sent back to the Emperor to face punishment."

According to Dominic Zou, TR-2748, "like most Singaporeans, our members have diverse backgrounds and motivations, but we all have enough love for Star Wars to put our time and effort in helping out charities -- while drenched in sweat, costuming as plastic spacemen."

Costuming is not all fun and games. Being a part of the 501st is also about helping kids feel comfortable in the environment. This is a picture of a trooper, trying to shake the hand of a terrified kid who kept running away.  They eventually got the better of him by doffing their helmets to show real human faces.

To conclude, the 501st has been there for many events. They are able to connect with the adolescents, act as bodyguards to celebrities, and make a child's wish come true.

Its a confirmed head shot, sir.

hands up trooper
