Just about every film in the Skywalker Saga has introduced new Force powers, and its finale, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, will be no different. Director and co-writer JJ Abrams spoke with Vanity Fair this week about introducing new Force powers in the film. Abrams emphasized the importance of bringing something new to each Star Wars film, even when dealing iconic moments in the films like lightsaber duels and chase scenes.
Abrams said,
"Among those things are not just new ways of doing sort of traditional, must-have sequences, whether it’s chases or lightsaber battles, or what have you. We wanted to make sure that this picture also showed aspects of the Force in ways that go beyond what you’ve seen before."
He also spoke about how Star Wars directors often find themselves in a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't situation, when it comes to finding the balance between changing things in the films. He said,
"There are some people who want to not like something—and they will, without question, find something to not like. And people who want to like it, will find the things to like. I feel like you get criticized for changing too much, you get criticized for not changing enough. And everyone’s opinion is valid."
Anyone who has witnessed the reaction to any Star Wars movie since 1977, knows that Abrams couldn't be more right. Some people will love it, some people will hate it, and everyone will want to tell you exactly hos they feel.
