Could The Mandalorian be headed to a theater near you? Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn implied this week that it's not out of the realm of possibilities. The studio executive was interviewed at the Variety Business Managers Breakfast on Wednesday and was asked by Variety editor-in-chief Claudia Eller asked Horn if content created for Disney+ might ever "spawn" theatrical releases the same way Disney's theatrical content has spawned Disney+ shows (like The Mandalorian and Marvel's The Falcon and the Winer Soldier)?
Horn replied, "The Mandalorian is already proving to be a big thing, so if that
series proves to be so compelling that we reverse engineer it into a
theatrical release, a two-hour film or whatever, O.K."
Given the recent departure of Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss from their planned 2022 Star Wars film (which would have been the first of a trilogy), Disney is almost assuredly exploring all their options for getting Star Wars back in theaters ASAP. Perhaps a film that's tied to an already popular story in the Star Wars universe might be a way to fast track the return and avoid some of the pitfalls that the studio has fallen into with their directors of late. If I had to bet, though, I'd say the odds of a The Mandalorian movie are slim. But then again...
Right now, we don't know what's next for Star Wars at the cinemas. There's the film that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is producing and the trilogy from The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson that are in development. But both projects seem to be in very early phases, and there is some question of whether Star Wars will even retain the December 16, 2022 release date that was earmarked for Benioff and Weiss' film.
Meanwhile, the picture of the next few years of Star Wars over at Disney+ is much clearer. We'll be seeing the rest of season one of The Mandalorian in the final weeks of this year, and the highly anticipated seventh season of The Clone Wars animated series will debut in February 2020. After that there's a second season of The Mandalorian that's currently filming and the series' about Cassian Andor (starring Diego Luna) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (starring Ewan McGregor) that are in the works.
The Mandalorian is set following the events of Return of the Jedi and follows the adventures of a "lone gunfighter", as he navigates the galaxy in the post-Empire/early days of the New Republic. The first episode of the series is available now on Disney+, with episode two being released on Friday. You can check out the trailer for the series below,
The series debuts on November 12th on Disney+, and stars Pedro Pascal as The Mandalorian, Gina Carrano as Cara Dune, Carl Weathers as Greef Carga, and Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon, as well as Nick Nolte, Werner Herzog, Emily Swallow, and Omid Abtahi in unknown roles. The Mandalorian is executive produced by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, with episodes directed by Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow, and Rick Famuyiwa, and Taika Waititi.
