Our next look at the final installment in the Skywalker may be just under two weeks away. A new report from the Black Series Rebels YouTube series claims that the theatrical trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise Of Skywalker will debut on Monday October 21st. Many have followed this up with speculation that the trailer will debut during Monday Night Football, which airs on ESPN (which is also owned by Disney). There has been no official confirmation as of yet from Lucasfilm, Disney, or ESPN.
The trailer is coming 10/21. Take that shit to the bank. 🤙 pic.twitter.com/A5FlKJ68O8— Black Series Rebels (@BlkSeriesRebels) October 9, 2019
Having the trailer debut during Monday Night Football would follow the pattern that The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi established, as both films debuted their theatrical trailer during Monday Night Football games in 2015 and 2017, respectively. Another funny connection (that probably has nothing to do with the decision), is that October 21st is also the date for the federal election in Canada, and the trailer for The Force Awakens also premiered on election day in Canada back in 2015. Again, that one seems more like a coincidence than anything else.
Unlike The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi when their trailers debuted, we have actually seen slightly more footage from The Rise Of Skywalker. This is due to the "special look" at the film that was shown at the D23 Expo in August, in addition to the teaser trailer that launched at Star Wars Celebration back in April. The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi only had their teaser trailers (also released at Celebration) at this point in their respective years (those films debuted behind the scenes reels, instead of trailers, at summer fan conventions).
The Monday Night Football game on October 21st is between the New England Patriots and the New York Jets, and kicks off at 8:15pm ET on ESPN. As we wait for the new trailer, you can relive the teaser and special look trailers below,
As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
