In the lead up to their huge issue on Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, Empire Magazine has been dishing out some fascinating new details about the upcoming film. The issue is expected to feature interviews with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, director & writer J.J. Abrams, and co-writer Chris Terrio. Terrio specifically is someone who has largely stayed out of the spotlight thus far, but now has began speaking out about the film and his part in crafting the story.
In a new interview excerpt released by Empire, Chris Terrio spoke about two questions that he and Abrams considered through the course of developing the story of The Rise Of Skywalker:
“One of them is a simple one: ‘Who is Rey?’ Which is a question that people not only wonder about quite literally, but wonder about in the spiritual sense. How can Rey become the spiritual heir to the Jedi? We kept coming back to ‘Who is Rey?’, and how can we give the most satisfying answer to that not only factually – because obviously people are interested in whether there's more to be learned of Rey's story – but more importantly who is she as a character? How will she find the courage and will and inner strength and power to carry on what she's inherited?”
“The second one is, ‘How strong is the Force?' It sounds a little simple, but actually when you get down to it, that is a sort of Zen Koan that we would really meditate on – not literally in yoga poses or anything, but like we would discuss, ‘What is the Force and how strong is the Force?' Those two things were really important.”
It's been really great to finally have Chris Terrio discuss this film, and it's especially exciting to hear him speak so eloquently about the story and characters. Given all of the elements The Rise Of Skywalker has deal with, and seemingly give proper ending to, it's great to hear that the writers are putting a lot of emphasis on Rey. This is her story after all, and I think we all can agree we want to see a satisfying conclusion for her character.
Be sure to check out Empire's previous reveals, including some awesome cover art, as well as new photos of the Kylo Ren and his Knights Of Ren.
