Rumor: Laeta Kalogridis Is Writing A "Knights of the Old Republic" Movie

One era that fans have been clamoring to see explored on the big screen is the so-called "Old Republic", events set thousands of years before the Skywalker Saga, and it looks like they might finally be getting their wish.  Buzzfeed News is reporting that Laeta Kalogridis (Alita: Battle Angel) is currently writing a "Knights of the Old Republic" script for Lucasfilm.  It is believed that this project is separate from the trilogies of films from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Wiess, and The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson

"Kalogridis is close to finishing the first script of a potential [Knights of the Old Republic] trilogy, according to the three sources."

It's not clear where this film would fit into the release schedule Disney has laid out for Star Wars.  Following this December's release of The Rise of Skywalker there will be a three year hiatus between Star Wars movies, until 2022 when the first film from Benioff and Weiss will hit (with follow-ups expected to be released in 2024 and 2026, and no other Star Wars movies released during that time).

Many had assumed that Benioff and Weiss' films would be set during "The Old Republic", given their recent work on Game of Thrones.  However, the film/trilogy that Kalogridis is working on appears to be separate from that, with Buzzfeed News reporting that it has been in development since 2018.

The name "Knights of the Old Republic" dates back to 2003 and the successful RPG from Bioware, which introduced the world to, now fan-favourite, characters like Revan, Darth Malak, and Bastila Shan. The game's success led to a direct sequel (Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords) in 2004 and a spiritual successor in the ongoing MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic, as well as a comic book series and a handful of novels.

The canon reset of 2014 rendered all of this material "Legends" (non-canon), which has had fans hoping to see a version of this era revitalized for the current canon. While I think it's very unlikely that Kalogridis' film(s) would be a direct adaptation of the 2003 video game, the prospect of revisiting this era (especially in live-action) is very exciting.

As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney
