Todd Fisher Discusses Carrie Fisher & Leia In 'Episode IX'

We are now less than a year away from the release of Star Wars: Episode IX, which is already being billed as the "final" installment in the Skywalker saga. While we don't know much else about the sequel so far, we do, however, know that the late Carrie Fisher will have a part to play in it.

Two years ago, on December 27th, 2016, Fisher passed away at the age of 60. At the time, the legendary actress had completed filming her scenes for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which premiered a year later in December of 2017. For a while it was believed The Last Jedi would be Carrie's final outing as General Organa. However, the official casting announcement confirmed director and co-writer J.J. Abrams would be utilizing unused footage from Episodes VII and VIII to bring Carrie back one last time as Leia.

Todd Fisher, brother of Carrie, recently talked with ABC News regarding his sister's legacy, and also addressed Carrie's upcoming appearance in Star Wars: Episode IX. First, Fisher gave some hints about Carrie's scene that are being used in Episode IX and spoke highly of the footage:

“There’s a lot of minutes of footage. I don’t mean just outtakes. This is unused, new content that could be woven into the storyline. That’s what’s going to give everybody such a great kick. It’s going to look like it was meant to be. Like it was shot yesterday... We’re not allowed to talk about the details of anything, but we’re thrilled at what’s been done.”

I think I can speak for a lot of fans when I say that the idea of bringing Leia back through unused footage has made me a bit uneasy. Carrie Fisher gave an absolutely beautiful performance in The Last Jedi, which ended up being a very fitting send off for her, albeit unintentional. Obviously if Leia is to return in Episode IX I hope her appearance can be just as profound, if not more so than than how she appeared in Episode VIII. Given Todd Fisher's encouraging words I'm hopeful that it can be pulled off seamlessly in the yet-to-be-titled ninth episode.

Star Wars: Episode IX hit theaters on December 20th, 2019.  The film stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Naomi Ackie, Dominic Monaghan, Anthony Daniels, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, and Carrie Fisher. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams, with a script by Abrams and Chris Terio.
