For fans hoping to see the galaxy's most feared bounty hunter on the big screen again, we have bad news. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed at a screening of Black Panther that the company is not making a Boba Fett film and are instead putting their complete focus on the live action streaming series The Mandalorian (currently filming, with Jon Favreau serving as writer and executive producer). Kennedy made the comments to reporter Erick Webber, who tweeted the following,
Kathleen Kennedy just confirmed to me Boba Fett movie is 100% dead, 100% focusing on THE MANDALORIAN #StarWars— 𝗘𝗪𝗲𝗯 (@ErickWeber) October 26, 2018
Had time for couple of questions, she was heading out door after hosting Coogler/BP party, told her to work BF into some upcoming SW project, my fave badass character for sure!— 𝗘𝗪𝗲𝗯 (@ErickWeber) October 26, 2018
The Boba Fett film was one of the very first rumors to hit the press following the Disney purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012. In February 2013, it was reported that Lawrence Kasdan was writing a young Han Solo film and Simon Kinberg was writing a Boba Fett film. It was later reported that Chronicle director Josh Trank was working on the Boba film prior to leaving the project less than a year after it was announced that he was making a Star Wars movie. Earlier this year, just prior to the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, it was reported that Logan director James Mangold would direct a Boba Fett film with a script co-written by him and Kinberg.
With The Mandalorian now in production, it seems the focus has
shifted to television--at least when it comes to characters in
Mandalorian armor. There is also always the possibility that Boba may
turn up in The Mandalorian, if not in season one then perhaps in a follow-up season. Especially given that one the last things George Lucas said before leaving Lucasfilm was that Fett survived being thrown in the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi.
The Boba Fett film seems to be a victim of the slowdown that Disney CEO Bob Iger talked about back in September following the disappointing performance of Solo at the box office. It looked to many outside Lucasfilm that the company was exploring putting out two Star Wars movies a year, which is why they kept Solo in its May release date (just six months after The Last Jedi) despite the massive reshoots caused by the replacement of directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller with Ron Howard. There were reports of multiple other films in development that have since been scrapped and now appears that the Boba Fett film was one of them.
The theatrical plan for Star Wars going forward past-Episode IX (released later this year) remains vague. The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson is contracted to oversee the development of a trilogy (with him writing and directing the first) and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are writing and producing a series of new films. None of these projects, however, have release dates or any story details yet.
