It's been a big couple of weeks for ILMxLAB. Late last month they announced Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series, coming to the Oculus Quest in 2019, and now they've revealed their latest project, Star Wars: Project Porg. This new project is a "mixed reality experiment", which will see the user befriending the inhabitants of the planet Ach-To, who became a phenomenon in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Project Porg was described by ILMxLAB as follows,
In Project Porg, you will need to gain the trust and affection
of your porgs by offering them treats and playing with them. Teach them
how to maneuver real-world environments with care instructions from Star Wars’ most meticulous droid, C-3PO.
StarWars.com also confirmed that Anthony Daniels, who has appeared in all eight live action Star Wars thus far, will reprise most famous role and voice C-3PO in Project Porg. No word yet if there will be an option to eat the porgs.
ILMxLAB showed off the experience at the Magic Leap Conference, and some lucky writers were given the opportunity to check it out. Dean Takahashi of Venture Beat was one of the lucky few, and he described his experience as follows,
"The Star Wars droid C3PO came to life as a hologram, talking about the little porgs that appeared in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. Anthony Daniels voiced C3PO in the experience. As C3PO was wondering where the porgs had gone, one of the creatures peeked over a virtual object on the floor.
Through the Magic Leap glasses, I could see the animated porg waddling around, penguin style, on the carpet in the real-world room. The porg was not perfectly placed. Sometimes it seemed like it was walking on air. But it looked fairly realistic in terms of the animation’s ability to blend in with real life.
I used the remote control in my hand to grab some snacks and scatter them around the room. The two porgs started going after them. Then the porgs started wandering everywhere — on top of the real world TV stand, on shelves, on tables, and the floor."
