The next installment in the saga of Gran Admiral Thrawn hits book stores next month, on July 24th, and publisher Del Rey has released a new preview excerpt from the novel on StarWars.comStar Wars Thrawn: Alliances is written by Timothy Zahn and takes place following the events of Zahn's 2016 novel Thrawn and during the events of the animated series Star Wars Rebels.  The new preview excerpt features a flashback to the Clone Wars when Thrawn first meets Anakin Skywalker.  Also revealed is new art features Thrawn and Anakin which be featured as the cover of the San Diego Comic Con exclusive version of the novel.  You can check out the art and read part of the excerpt below,

“I greet you,” a calm voice came back in the same language. “Did you give your name as General Skywalker?”

“I did,” Anakin said, frowning. “Why, have you heard of me?”

“No, not at all,” the other said. “I was merely surprised. Let me assure you I mean no harm to you or your equipment. I merely wished a closer look at this interesting device.”

“Glad to hear it,” Anakin said. “You’ve had your look. Pull back as ordered.”

There was a pause. Then, at a leisurely pace, the ship drifted away from the ring. “May I ask what brings a Republic envoy to this part of space?” the intruder asked.

“May I ask what business it is of yours?” Anakin countered. It wasn’t very polite, but he wasn’t feeling in a particularly polite mood. Every minute he was stuck out here making sure this prowler behaved himself was a minute he couldn’t spend looking for Padmé. “You can be on your way at any time.”

“On my way?”

“To continue your travels,” Anakin said. “To go wherever you were going before you stopped to look at my hyperdrive ring.”

Another silence. The alien ship, to Anakin’s annoyance, had halted its sideways drift and was now pacing the hyperdrive ring at a distance of a hundred meters. Still far too close for comfort. “Yes, I could continue on my way,” the intruder said. “But it might be more useful for me to assist you in your quest.”

The novel is Timothy Zahn's twelfth in the Star Wars universe and second of the "new" canon.  Zahn created the character of Grand Admiral Thrawn for his first Star Wars novel, Heir to the Empire, back in 1991.  The novel, along with its sequels Dark Force Rising and The Last Command, kicked off the new era of Star Wars publishing which continues to this day.  Zahn later helped bring the character back following the canon reset in 2014, writing the new Thrawn series of novels and advising on the character's portrayal on Rebels.

Star Wars Thrawn: Alliances hits shelves on July 24th.  San Diego Comic Con takes place from July 18th-22nd.
