Michael K. Williams Says His 'Solo' Character Would Have Been "Half Mountain Lion"

The production of Solo: A Star Wars Story has been one of the strangest in the history of cinema.  After several months of shooting, and only a few weeks of shooting left, Lucasfilm and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller decided to part ways and Ron Howard was brought in to reshoot a huge portion of the film.  One of the changes that had to be made was Michael K. Williams, who was originally cast to play Dryden Vos in the film, was replaced in the film by Paul Bettany because Williams' schedule wouldn't allow for the massive reshoots.  Williams spoke about what his character would have been as well as the situation surrounding the infamous directors change in a recent interview with the Jim and Sam Show.  You can see Williams discuss Solo in the video below,

About his character Williams said,

"He was half mountain lion, half human. He was extremely sophisticated, very rich — like he had been around the world, older guy. And he was in sort of a love triangle between Emilia Clarke's character Qi'Ra and the young Han Solo. Not where it was overtly a love triangle, but there was definitely a pissing contest going on for the girl’s attention. He’s old and one is younger, so it was that thing also going on, like ‘Young buck, I’ve been around the world.’ But he’s like ‘The young chick wants the young buck.’ So there was a little bit of that energy going on. But the relationship that was on the paper was definitely with Qi’Ra and Han Solo. But it there was definitely some energy going on."

When Williams was unavailable for the reshoots, Ron Howard hired his friend, BAFTA-nominated actor Paul Bettany to fill the role.  While Williams' character would have been an alien of some kind, likely portrayed at least partially through motion-capture, Bettany's version of Dryden Vos appears to just be human.  This change is likely a result the production schedule, on an already visual effects heavy film, being especially condensed given that, as Williams pointed out, Lucasfilm did not want to move the release date.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi'Ra, Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-37, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, and Paul Bettany (The Avengers) as Dryden Vos.  The film is directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), with a script by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time).
