In the trailer and teaser for Solo: A Star Wars Story that were released this week, we were treated to a couple of looks at the new droid L3-37. The droid is played by Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge through motion-capture, and will be partnered with Donald Glover's Lando during the film. Director Ron Howard and co-screenwriters Jon and Lawrence Kasdan spoke about L3-37 in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican, as part of the magazine's cover story about Solo.
Jon Kasdan described L3-37's look, saying,
"She’s a self-modified droid. The idea is that she’s sort of a mutt, if you will, of various parts of different kinds of droids who has improved upon herself."
Howard explained how L3-37 is different from other droids we've seen in the Star Wars galaxy, telling EW,
"Her AI is way up there in terms of IQ. She’s capable of some pretty interesting conversations. And Phoebe is
hilarious and brilliant and really helped bring that character to life
in ways that are funny and surprising."
Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi'Ra, Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-3K, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, and Paul Bettany (The Avengers) as Dryden Vos. The film is directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), with a script by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time).
