One thing that is becoming clear about Solo: A Star Wars Story is that it will take us into the criminal underworld of the Star Wars galaxy like never before on the big screen. This can be seen in the types of characters that we're being introduced through the promotional material. Director Ron Howard and co-screenwriters Lawrence and Jon Kasdan spoke about some of the new characters featured in Solo in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican, as part of the magazine's cover story about Solo. The characters covered are Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson), Val (Thandie Newton), and Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany).
About Beckett, Howard said, "Well, he really shapes Han really more than anybody, as Han comes to
realize that in a lawless time he needs to try to come to terms with
some kind of moral code."
Jon Kasdan described Val, who meets Han through Beckett, and her relationship with Han, saying, "She’s a little skeptical of this kid when she meets him. And her relationship with him goes in, I think, an … interesting direction."
Kasdan also spoke about Dryden Vos and his criminal lifestyle, saying, "It’s a sort of combination of class and swagger and real danger which I
think is a fun thing, and he absolutely inhabits it. He’s way deeper in the crime world than anyone else that we meet in the
movie.
EW also clarifies that while Dryden shares a last name with Quinlan Vos (a Jedi featured in The Clone Wars animated series and the novel Dark Disciple) the characters are not related.
Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi'Ra, Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-3K, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, and Paul Bettany (The Avengers) as Dryden Vos. The film is directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), with a script by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time).
