George Lucas and Ron Howard on the set of American Graffiti in 1972 |

Solo: A Star Wars Story director, Ron Howard's history with Star Wars creator George Lucas predates the original Star Wars film in 1977. Howard starred in Lucas' 1973 film American Graffiti, so when Howard to on the gig directing a Star Wars film he was sure to reach out to his old boss. Howard and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, another old friend of Lucas', spoke about Lucas' influence on the new film with Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican, as part of the magazine's cover story about Solo.
Howard revealed that Lucas actually visited the set of Solo on Howard's first day. The advice he offered Howard was akin to what Qui-Gon Jinn told the young Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace. "He told me just trust my instincts, you know?" Howard told EW.
He wound up making a little suggestion while he was on set, that both Kennedy and Howard liked enough to not only shoot, but put in the movie. Kennedy explained,
"There’s even one little moment in a scene that — I can’t tell you what,
sorry — but in the scene on the Millennium Falcon where George said,
‘Why doesn’t Han just do this.’ (...) Ron happened to be by the monitor and not inside the Falcon and he goes,
‘Oh that’s a great idea,’ and ran in and said, ‘George wants us to do this.’ So that was pretty cool. I think George felt pretty great about that."
Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi'Ra, Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-3K, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, and Paul Bettany (The Avengers) as Dryden Vos.
