'The Last Jedi' Nominated For Four Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for this year's Academy Award this morning and Star Wars: The Last Jedi picked up four nominations.  The Last Jedi was nominated for Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects. The Oscars will be held on March 4th with Jimmy Kimmel hosting.

With its four nominations, The Last Jedi has the third most nominations of any Star Wars film (behind The Force Awakens with five, and A New Hope which was nominated for ten and won six). Despite being nominated seven times in the past two years, Star Wars has not won an Oscar since Disney purchased the company and began releasing films again.  In fact, the last Star Wars film to win an Oscar was The Empire Strikes Back, which won for Best Sound Mixing, although Return of the Jedi did receive a special achievement in visual effects award three years later.  Although all three prequels picked up nominations, none of them won.

The Last Jedi is John Williams' 51st Academy Award nomination and will be his sixth Oscar, if he wins.  This is Williams' fifth Oscar nomination for his Star Wars music, with all his scores for the three installments of the Original Trilogy and both installments in the Sequel Trilogy being nominated.  He has only won one for Star Wars, however, back in 1977 when the score for the original film won.

Congratulations to all the nominees and best of luck in March!
