In the final moments of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, after it has been revealed that Luke Skywalker was not actually on Crait, we see the character look up and see a twin sunset one more time. He then fades away, becoming one with the Force. The death of Luke Skywalker was not something the filmmakers took lightly. Writer/director Rian Johnson explained his thought process for the scene in an interview with The Huffington Post.
Johnson said, "I wasn’t looking forward to it. I was kind of dreading it, but at the
same time it felt like the right moment. It felt like the right time in
this trilogy."
He elaborated about why he felt this was the right time for the character's story to end, saying,
"It does go back a little bit to what he said at the beginning [of 'The
Last Jedi']. 'What do you think one guy walking out there with a
lightsaber [can do]?' ... The answer is: Create a legend that will
spread hope. And once he’s done that, combined with the physical toll
it’s taken on him, you can make the case that then there’s nothing more
powerful that he could accomplish."
The effect of Luke Skywalker's actions are seen moments later in the film, during The Last Jedi's epilogue with "Broom Boy." Johnson previously discussed the meaning of this scene, saying,
"To me, it shows that the act Luke Skywalker did, of deciding to take on
this mantle of ‘the legend,’ after he had decided the galaxy was better
off with, had farther reaching consequences than saving 20 people in a
cave."
