Rumor: 'Star Wars Episode IX' Working Title Revealed

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hasn't even been in the theaters for a full week yet, and work is already ramping up behind the scenes for the JJ Abrams directed follow-up, Star Wars Episode IX.  Last week, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that Abrams would be pitching him the story of Episode IX on Friday and now it seems the working title for the film has been revealed.  The title, which was reported by the team over at Fantha Tracks, is along the same lines as previous working titles like "Blue Harvest" for Return of the Jedi, "Space Bear" for The Last Jedi, and "Red Cup" for next year's Solo: A Star Wars Story.  Which is to say, it doesn't tell us very much about the film, but rather is still fun to know.

According to Fantha Tracks, the film's working title is "Black Diamond" and the business name that Lucasfilm and Disney are using to produce the film is "Carbonado Industries (UK)" (similar to how the name Foodles was used for The Force Awakens).  Fantha Tracks points out that Carbonado is a type of black diamond and that black diamonds are known for their luminescence.  They imply that perhaps this hint at how the film will delve further into the ways of the Force, which given what happened The Last Jedi seems like a very possibility.

Another interpretation of the title, and my own first instinct when I saw the working title, is that it is a reference to Black Diamond ski runs.  In downhill skiing, black diamond runs are the most challenging slopes and are only recommended for expert skiers.  Perhaps the title could also be a tongue in cheek reference to the difficulties when it comes to making concluding chapters of trilogies.

Star Wars Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.  The film will be directed by JJ Abrams and co-written by Abrams and Chris Terrio.
