SPOILER ALERT!
One of the moments that has fans talking coming out of Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the confrontation between Supreme Leader Snoke, Kylo Ren, and Rey. The scene begins with Rey being brought before Snoke and ends with one of the film's most shocking twists: Kylo Ren kills Snoke and declares himself Supreme Leader of the First Order (though he can't convince Rey to join him). There had been a lot of speculation about who Snoke was and what he wanted, thus leading some to feel the his story ended rather abruptly. But, according to The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson, it had be this way to further Kylo Ren's story.
Johnson took part in a live Q&A with Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican where he said,
"When I was working on the character of Kylo, I came to a place where I thought the most interesting thing would be to knock the shaky foundation out from under him at the beginning of this movie. By the end of this film, he’s gone from being a wannabe Vader to someone who is standing on his own feet as a complex villain taking the reins."
He went on to add, "That made me realize the most interesting thing would be to eliminate that dynamic between the ‘emperor’ and pupil, so that all bets are off going into the next one."
It will be interesting to see how Kylo deals with his new position and rule in 2019 Star Wars Episode IX (which writer/director JJ Abram pitched to Disney CEO Bob Iger last week).
