'The Last Jedi' Opens to $220 Million Opening Weekend at the Box Office

It's been a big weekend for Star Wars as the eighth instalment in the Skywalker saga had a huge opening weekend at the domestic box office.  Variety is reporting that Star Wars: The Last Jedi brought in $220 million this weekend, making it the second highest opening weekend of all time (second to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which brought in $248 million in 2015).  The Last Jedi made $45 million on its "preview night" (Thursday evening) alone.

The results are slightly higher than expected, the film was originally projected to open to a $200 million weekend.  It's not much of a difference, but it does show that interest in the franchise is alive and well.  The opening weekend for The Last Jedi is significantly higher than Rogue One, which opened to a $155 million first weekend last year.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in theaters now!
