SPOILER ALERT!
With the latest three Star Wars movies, one thing that always happens after the film is we start learning about the "surprise" cameos by the filmmakers and their celebrity friends. There was Daniel Craig and Michael Giacchino in The Force Awakens, director Gareth Edwards and the droid Chopper from Star Wars Rebels in Rogue One. Now some of the cameos in The Last Jedi are being revealed, thanks to a special live Q&A hosted by Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican, which included writer/director Rian Johnson, Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill, and sound editor Matt Wood.
Eagle eyed fans may have noticed that Hamill is listed twice in The Last Jedi credits, once as Luke Skywalker (obviously) and once as a character named "Dobbu Scay" (which is apparently anagram for the film's editor Bob Duscay). While Hamill wouldn't reveal who this character is, he did say,
"I said I’d love to do a CGI thing, and he said sure. And I got to go to the set of the casino and see in detail 150 extras in jaw-dropping costumes."
Another cameo in the film is Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who had previously appeared in all of Johnson's other films. Now we knew about this one before, but now Johnson has revealed who Levitt leant his voice to. Levitt voices the alien who turns Finn and Rose in to the Canto Bight police for their lack of respect for parking laws.
And finally, there is apparently a reference to the Star Wars Legends material (books and comics released prior to September 2014) when Rey approaches the tree on Ach-To. Sound Editor Matt Wood explained that when they were working on that scene they wanted to have a chant of sorts that was drawing her into the Tree. Wood said,
"We thought, why don’t we use something there that’s a call, but also a chant. So we worked with the story group, Leland Chee and Pablo Hidalgo, to come up with something from Star Wars Legends stories that had a Force connection."
While he wouldn't say what the Legends reference was (my money is on some variation of the Jedi Code, seeing as the Sith Code was canonized back on Star Wars: The Clone Wars), he did reveal another cameo when it came to recording the chant. The chant involved twenty actors creating a vocal loop, among those involved was Rogue One composer Michael Giacchino who also directed the actors in the sequence.
There's still more cameos to be revealed. We know that British princes William and Harry have cameos as do actor Tom Hardy and singer Gary Barlow. They all apparently share a scene together, so my money is on the moment when Finn and Rose are about to executed by Phasma and Hux (with the princes playing the execution stormtroopers and Hardy and Barlow as the troopers holding Finn and Rose down). But we'll have to wait for confirmation on that one. Another cameo not mentioned during the Q&A: Rogue One director Gareth Edwards as a Resistance fighter on Crait (next to the guy who tastes the salt).
