Last week in an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine Daisy Ridley stated that she did not plan on returning to the character of Rey after she completes Star Wars Episode IX (which hits theaters in December 2019). This, naturally, set off a firestorm online of people speculating about why Ridley wasn't interested in doing any more Star Wars films. Fortunately Ridley clarified those comments this weekend during a Star Wars: The Last Jedi press event in Los Angeles. Ridley explained her comments further saying,
"When I did sign up, I did sign up for three films and that's where I sort of saw the story ending. I
think everyone has perhaps taken that as me going, 'I don't want
anything to do with it' which is vastly untrue because this is awesome."
Ridley's new comments don't change her stance on whether she wants to do more Star Wars movies after the sequel trilogy is complete, but rather clarifies her tone on the matter. Though, as we learned with Harrison Ford, there's a always a chance Star Wars actors will change their mind about returning to their roles. Ridley even alluded to this in the Rolling Stone piece which led to her needing clarify her feelings about being in Star Wars. When asked if she would be open to coming back in thirty years, like Ford and his original trilogy co-stars Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher did, she said,
"Who knows? I honestly feel like the world may end in the next 30 years,
so, if in 30 years we are not living underground in a series of
interconnected cells ... then sure. Maybe. But again, it's like, who
knows."
In the meantime, we can still look forward to seeing Ridley as Rey in The Last Jedi in eleven days and in Episode IX in 2019.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits US theaters on December 15th. The
film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley as
Rey, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as
Kylo Ren, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico,
Laura Dern as Amilyn Holdo, Benicio Del Toro as DJ, and Lupita Nyong'o
as Maz Kanata.
