In advance of Star Wars: The Last Jedi release in theaters next month Rolling Stone magazine is featuring a cover story about the film, featuring interviews with several of the film's key players. The entire cover story, as well as the cover which features Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, and Adam Driver as Rey, Luke Skywalker, and Kylo Ren respectively, online. The cover story features interviews with Ridley, Hamill, and Driver as well as writer/director Rian Johnson and Episode IX writer/director JJ Abrams.
When asked about how much direction he was given when it comes to, based on some hypothetical grand plan for the Star Wars saga going forward, Johnson reiterated that he maintained that he had almost complete autonomy. He told Rolling Stone,
"The truth is, stories are made up! Whether somebody made this whole
thing up 10 years ago and put it on a whiteboard and we all have to
stick to that, or whether we're organically finding it as we move
forward, it doesn't mean that any less thought is being put into it."
Abrams, for his part, did hint that he and Johnson had collaborated on certain aspects of the new film. Abrams also spoke briefly about he views his work on Episode IX, suggesting that he sees it as the end point for the Skywalker story. He said, "I do see it that way. But the future is in flux." Or, to put it another way,
Ridley, for her part, seems to agree with Abrams. When asked about if she wanted to do more Star Wars movies after Episode IX, she told Rolling Stone,
"I am really, really excited to do the third thing and round it
out, because ultimately, what I was signing on to was three films. So in
my head, it's three films. I think it will feel like the right time to
round it out."
Hamill, who himself once thought he was done with his Star Wars role, spoke about how a documentary about The Beatles helped him get himself into Luke's headspace once again. He recalled,
"I was hearing Ringo talk about 'Well, in those days, it was peace and
love.' And how it was a movement that largely didn't work. I thought
about that. Back in the day, I thought, by the time we get into power,
there will be no more wars. Pot will be legal. I believed all that. I had to use that feeling of failure to relate
to it."
Driver spoke about what it's like shooting a Star Wars movie, saying,
"Watching Star Wars, it's an action-adventure. But shooting it, it's a straight comedy. Stormtroopers trying to find a bathroom. People dressed as trolls, like, running into doorways. It's hilarious."
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th. The
film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley as
Rey, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as
Kylo Ren, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico,
Laura Dern as Amilyn Holdo, Benicio Del Toro as DJ, and Lupita Nyong'o
as Maz Kanata.
