Andy Serkis Talks About Snoke's Role in 'The Last Jedi'

When The Force Awakens came out, one of the characters fans have been curious to learn more about is Andy Serkis' Supreme Leader Snoke.  While Snoke only appeared as a hologram in three short scenes, fans have been speculating for years now about who he is, what his motives are, and where he is from.  The Last Jedi promises to answer some (but not all) of these questions.  Serkis spoke with Entertainment Weekly recently about what fans can expect from Snoke in the film.  The interview was a released as part of EW's online coverage of The Last Jedi, which coincides with a cover story about the film in this week's issue.

Serkis spoke about Snoke's disappointment with his apprentice Kylo Ren's progression in his training, telling EW,

"His training of Kylo Ren is not yielding what he wants. Therefore his anger towards Kylo Ren is intensified because he can’t bear weakness in others. Part of the manipulation is goading him with Hux and playing them off against each other."

He also gave fans a bit a tease about Snoke's backstory and his motivations, saying,

"The thing about Snoke is that he is extremely strong with the Force, the dark side of the Force. He’s terribly powerful, of course. But he is also a very vulnerable and wounded character. He has suffered and he has suffered injury. The way that his malevolence comes out is in reaction to that. His hatred of the Resistance is fueled by what’s happened to him personally."

I find what Serkis is saying about Snoke's hatred of the Resistance very interesting.  I had assumed that Snoke was some sort of ancient being, but now it sounds more like his dark turn is more recent. It doesn't sound like Snoke's full backstory will be revealed in this film (nor should it), but it does sound like what we will learn will be in relation to Snoke's relationship with Kylo Ren.  Which makes the fact that Snoke is disappointed in Kylo all the more intriguing.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th.  The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley as Rey, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Amilyn Holdo, Benicio Del Toro as DJ, and Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata.
