'The Last Jedi' Expected to Make $200 Million-Plus on Opening Weekend

It should come as no surprise that a Star Wars movie will make lots of money at the box office, but the question that Disney executives and investors are wondering is how much money will The Last Jedi make?  They should be happy with the latest projections from The Hollywood Reporter, who are reporting that the Rian Johnson directed film is tracking for a $200 million-plus domestic opening weekend.  This would put The Last Jedi on short list of films that have opened to $200 million at the domestic box office in their opening weekend, which is currently made up of The Force Awakens, The Avengers, and Jurassic World.

The Force Awakens currently holds the record for highest domestic gross on opening weekend, with $248 million.  Rogue One, conversely, made $155.1 million on its opening weekend last year.  It seems safe to assume The Last Jedi will make more on its opening weekend than Rogue One and less than The Force Awakens.  Though, it seems very possible that the film will pass Jurassic World and land in second place overall for highest opening weekend domestic gross.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th.  The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley as Rey, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Amilyn Holdo, Benicio Del Toro as DJ, and Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata.
