'The Last Jedi' Tracking To Have The Second Greatest Opening Weekend Ever

There's no denying that Star Wars is the most popular and profitable film franchise ever. With a new film hitting theaters every year, there appears to be no end in sight for this success. In less than 50 days from now, the eighth installment of the Skywalker saga, The Last Jedi, will be released, and it's already expected to make a massive splash at the box office.

According to a new report by Shawn Robbins from Box Office Pro, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is projected take in a whopping $215 million dollars on its first weekend, which would give it the second highest grossing opening weekend ever. Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Jurassic World currently hold the #1 and #2 spots, respectively.

Robbins also predicts that by the end of its box office run, The Last Jedi will have taken in a grand total of $742 million in domestic ticket sales. That would place the film near the top of the all time domestic box office, coming in 3rd behind The Force Awakens and Avatar.

He attributes his predictions to various factors, including fan response to the trailers, the inclusion of acclaimed director Rian Johnson, and just the simple fact that "It's Star Wars";

"The family component remains as strong as ever now that multiple generations of fans have embraced the new saga centered around Rey, Kylo Ren, Poe Dameron, and Finn. With Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker at the forefront of things this time around, and the late Carrie Fisher in her final role as General Leia, older fans will be eager to see their stories continue as well."
"As evidenced by last year’s Rogue One, the enduring appeal and cultural impact of Star Wars continues to transcend other franchises as even its spin-off films without established, familiar characters perform at a level most series never reach at their peak. With another return to the core saga films this year, Last Jedi should again reach heights achieved by very few films — pending positive word of mouth and reviews, of course."

Even though it seems like a given that Star Wars will be successful, it helps that The Force Awakens and Rogue One were so successful, both critically and financially. While neither were perfect films, they have continued to raise the bar(and the hype) for the franchise. The Last Jedi has a lot of expectations to live up to, and I believe it will meet them, and even surpass them across the board.
