We are saddened to report that legendary Star Wars costume designer John Mollo has passed away at the age of 86.

Mollo was best known costume designer on Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. He was responsible for creating many of the outstanding costumes seen in both of those films, and helped establish the visual style of Star Wars saga as a whole. The London native would go on to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design for his work on A New Hope.

John Mollo would go on to work on countless other classic films, including Ridley Scott's Alien in 1979, and would also be bestowed an additional Oscar alongside Bhanu Athaiya for 1982's Ghandi.

Below you can view a clip from the costume design segment of the 1978 Oscars, featuring John Mollo accepting the award:

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Mr. Mollo. He will be greatly missed as his creations will continue to be enjoyed by generations of Star Wars fans to come.
