Marvel's Flagship 'Star Wars' Comic Series Gains New Creative Team

Some big changes are coming to Marvel's Star Wars comics very soon! Since recapturing the license to create new Star Wars comics, Marvel has been hard at work on many different series, which have all revolved around the flagship series, simply titled "Star Wars."

The Star Wars series, which is set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back and focuses on the further adventures of Han, Luke, and Leia, has been going strong since January 2015, backed up some talented creators, including Jason Aaron, John Cassaday, Simone Bianchi, and others.

Now, it has been announced that the a completely new creative team will be taking over the series later this year and will be driving it to some unique places. Starting with issue #38, which is due to hit comic book stores this Fall, the Star Wars series will receive new leadership with writer Kieron Gillen and artist Salvador Larocca. The duo previously teamed up to produce the very popular Darth Vader comic series, which ran from February 2015 to October 2016.

In an interview with StarWars.com, Gillen described his aspirations for the series, which includes guiding our heroes to a location previously seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story:

“My aim’s simple – to do what Salva and I did with Darth Vader, but for Leia, Luke and Han. As in, chart the rise and fall of the Rebellion between A New Hope and the Empire Strikes Back, how it changes them all and how it changes the universe. So a simple aim, but as nightmarishly tricky to pull off as dropping a proton torpedo down a thermal exhaust port. But hopefully as thrilling if we pull it off. I can’t wait till you see it up. First up: the post-apocalyptic hell that remains of Jedha after the Death Star punched a hole through its mantle.”

Cover artwork for issue #38 created by David Marquez can be seen below:

And for those who might be intimidated at the prospect of catching up with this series, Kieron Gillen took to Twitter to encourage fans that issue #38 will be a good place to start:

It will certainly be exciting and interesting to see how Jedha fared in the wake of the events of Rogue One, as well as seeing the characters of the Original Trilogy reactions.
