By Ciaran Duggan,

Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo in the Star Wars Original Trilogy and Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, was born on this day back in 1942.

In 1975, film director George Lucas used Ford to read lines for actors being cast for parts in his upcoming space opera, Star Wars.

At the reading, Steven Spielberg told George that the American actor was well suited for the part of Han Solo and helped convince George to give Harrison the role.

Ford went on to star as Han Solo in the next two Star Wars sequels, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as in The Star Wars Holiday Special.

The 75-year-old asked Lucas to write in the death of Han Solo at the beginning of the third act of Return of the Jedi, saying that it would lend more dramatic weight to the film, but Lucas refused.

On April 29, 2014, Lucasfilm and Disney announced the cast of J.J. Abrams's Star Wars: Episode VII. Harrison Ford was one of a number of stars from the Original Trilogy to return, including Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.

The Academy Award-nominated actor is equally as famous for his portrayal of the archaeologist Indiana Jones in the Indiana Jones franchise.
