When one director is currently filming a movie and another is already working on the sequel, there is bound to be times when one director is going to ask the other to change something for the sake of their story. Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican one such instance where he asked The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams to make a change to his film to benefit Johnson's film.
The change has to do with the end of the film. According to Johnson,
"I asked if R2 could come with Rey, and if BB-8 could stay behind with the Resistance. Originally it was BB-8 who went with Rey, which makes sense for the story in a way. But I asked, ‘Can you do me this solid and switch the droids?’"
This, of course, raises the question of why? What role does R2-D2 play in The Last Jedi that made him accompanying Rey to Ach-To and (presumably) reuniting with Luke Skywalker so essential? A safe guess is that he has some crucial piece of information stowed away in his memory systems that will play a big part in our understanding of the story. Whether that's information about the First Order, Jedi lesson plans, some details about what happened in the 30 years between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, or perhaps even the truth about Rey's parents is anybody's guess.
