By Ciaran Duggan,

The first reference to Star Wars Day in the UK was on the day Margaret Thatcher took office as Prime Minister on May 4, 1979.

Thatcher's political party, the Conservatives, had allegedly placed a congratulatory advert in The London Evening News which said "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations."

The saying was also used in a UK Parliament defence 25 years later on May 4, 1994.

Star Wars Day or May 4 celebrates Star Wars and has grown into a special holiday for fans of the movies.

The date was chosen because of the famous "May the Force be with you" catchphrase which has been altered to "May the Fourth be with you".

Since the term was first used it has grown into a celebratory holiday for Star Wars fans even though it hasn't been officially declared by Lucasfilm.
