'Episode VII' Actress Daisy Ridley Comments On Jaina Solo Rumors

By Chris Seekell

Any Star Wars fans regularly checking the Episode VII cast list on movie information site IMDb will have noticed that among other confirmed roles, actress Daisy Ridley has been credited as Legacy canon character Jaina Solo.

After Ridley was announced for Episode VII along with a photo that placed her between Han Solo actor Harrison Ford and Leia Organa actress Carrie Fisher, many fans have speculated that the film would include the now non-canon daughter of Han and Leia.

However, today, Ridley took to Twitter to subtly refute the rumors.

We should probably take this as a hint that while possibly including some Legacy elements, Episode VII will be an original story with new characters.

UPDATE: Daisy Ridley has since deleted the Tweet.

It'll probably be Jaina, but not "Jaina". Maybe something more like Jaana or Jiina or some other similar crap... Disney doesnt have the brainpower on its payroll to pull something original...

so if Daisy is Jaina, maybe Adam Drive will be Jacen?

Disney is not making this movie. Lucasfilm is. I dont know what is so hard to understand about that. Disney helped put out the Kill Bill movies. They own Miramax. They own Lucasfilm, but they arent making the movie. Idiots

Love the armchair experts, that don't know I am madly in love with Jar Jar Binks... dont tell anyone but I have an engagement ring in my dresser

HAHAHAHH

Jar Jar in the Clone Wars episodes was hilarious, especially when He fell off the cliff

But... the daughter's name is Jaina Solo... you can't just change the name. It's like having the name Luke replaced for Harry. It's changing the story... even if Disney bought Lucasfilms... they bought Star Wars as it is.

Hairy Skywalker would only be if Luke married a Wookie. Just sayin.

It'd be a nice nod to the EU fans if they did keep some of the names from the novels etc but I wouldn't bet on it
As for who's making the film, Marvel wouldn't be having the success it is if not for Disney's input and film making experience, not to mention financial backing, if you think Disney isn't as involved in this as Lucasfilm you're gravely naive

This movie is going to be a disappointment if they don't follow the books.

The movi hasn't even been released yet, quit the speculation and understand that George Lucas gave Abrams complete creative control. The next chapters of Star Wars is going to be great.

Exactly!!!

But they can't replace an actual character with something different. I hope they have enough" brainpower" to keep her and her name.

Who knows.... Maybe Ridley is the real culprit on that IMDB page?? ;)

1. Jaina is only an "actual character" in the EU, which the company is now ON RECORD as abandoning vis a vis the new films.
2. They will keep neither. Who's to say she's even playing their daughter? Who's to say they will even have a daughter in the films? Give it up; the EU will never make it off the pages of the books.

Have you heard of something called Broad Strokes (selecting elements from previous works)? Or do you live by an all-or-nothing philosophy??

"You must unlearn what you have learned."

I don't understand this "they can't remove Jaina, she is part of the story" talk. No she isn't. She is part of the extended universe which is FAN CREATED. It is based on the movies, but the books aren't written by Lucas or Disney or Lucasfilms, they are written by fans, so she is not part of the story.

I would really like to see the movies following at least to some extent the EU, I really enjoy the stories, but that does not mean that Disney HAS to. For all we know, JJ Abrams hasn't even read the EU and has no idea who Jaina Solo is.

Jaina is part of the Expanded Universe. NO WHERE in any movie or TV show Disney is calling "Cannon" does any of the children of Han/Leia or Luke exist. None of them shows up except in books and comics (and video games). Disney is now saying NONE of that is Cannon to the VII-IX films.

I just want to clarify for all you uninformed opinionated goobs that keeps saying the EU is "not Star Wars" that at least the first decade of Star Wars books went through A pretty rigorous vetting process with one of George Lucas Main script writers. They were required to keep continuity in the storyline and get approval from Lucasfilm to publish their books. Therefore, they are absolutely not fanmade. They are just as Cannon to the Star Wars universe as some of the stories from Marvel comics that don't adhere to or fit inside of the main well known stories.
Disney just all the sudden decided they don't want to recognize 20+ years of stories and games because it would make writing 7-9 extremely complex. It's easier for them to build a story line that will appeal to the masses (beyond us die hard EU fans) if they say "we're rebooting, we don't recognize the EU in our storyline"

I think they'd be foolish to COMPLETELY ignore the EU and not bring characters like the Solo kids, the Horns, Kyp Durron, Ben and Mara Jade Skywalker and similar central figures of the past 20+ years of stories into the film in some form or fashion. They can make these characters exist without really recognizing the EU in its full form.

I named my first-born daughter Jaina. She'll be 7 when this movie comes out, and I hope to God that they keep the characters and only change the plot!

Jessyca Adams said...

I also named my daughter Jaina. She'll be 11 when episode 7 is released. I am hoping she will be able to see her name sake on screen.

Unknown said...

My Jaina will be 6 when this is released. She and I are both hoping for the name/character

No way are three people in a row all parents of a girl named Jaina hahaha that's epic

Unknown said...

My Jaina will be 4 when it comes out. I don't see the big deal people who blindly follow the movies (and only the movies) are making about the EU. They have borrowed elements of the EU before (Aayla Secura, Quinlan Vos), so why can't they now?

Unknown said...

I know why they can't borrow elements! They don't want to take the time of day to do it right! Look at Eragon, so many thing have been done wrong there. Cirque De Freak, Percy Jackson. I was excited about all of them and then gravely dissapointed after watching them. The movies these days that go from books need to be handled by the experts of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, even Game of Thrones. At least they know how to follow books.

Tobias Brahms said...

So, counting up my Jaina makes five. Mine will be 5 when the movie comes out. I may not have been the earliest, but somehow mine turned out more epic, she was born on May the 4th.

Guys, guys, guys. That can't be Jaina because she's way too young to be Han and Leia's daughter due to the ages of Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. Daisy Ridley was born in 1992 and her character looks to be in her early 20's or late teens, as well. Harrison and Carrie both look like they are in their 70's and 60's, respectively. At the end of Return of the Jedi, the Skywalkers' and Solo were in their early 20's. Unless Han and Leia waited 20 years to start having kids, I just don't see Daisy's character being their daughter.

They could surprise us, however, and still have her be Jaina, but as their granddaughter, or, her character really is Rey (as it's currently listed on IMDB) and she's Jaina's daughter, thus, still being their granddaughter.

Idiots? Disney is allowing eradication of 40 years of e.u.!!! That is a total snub to all those writers ans readers who have invested their interest, time and money since the original trilogy. You may ignore certain actions, even wars. You can ignore minor characters. But how can They allow abrahms to change everything so much that major characters such as jania solo and Ben Skywalker don't exist, and there is a new Jedi order? I wouldn't see Abrahams pigeon holed in by every last book and character, but it's bullI am madly in love with Jar Jar Binks... dont tell anyone but I have an engagement ring in my dresser to eradicate so much literary history.

Unknown said...

Obviously, They can do whatever They want. It doesn't make it right. As everyone is so annoyingly saying the books weren't Lucas sanctioned, I have to disagree. Randomly laying on my table is Star Wars: Apocalypse , which has the "Lucas Books" logo printed right on the cover. Whatever "They" are currently doing, why dies it have to destroy what They already did. Apparently They have been taking My money, but I guess it's ok to say about the e.u. "oops just kidding"?

The major plots and characters need to carry over. According to Disney/Lucas etc the e.u. is now just a bunch of separate, stand alone, or support stories to the Cannon. Even their logic is flawed. How can the books make any sense at all if Luke doesn't at least form some sort of New Jedi Order, and if at least Jania and Ben we're never born? If there's no New Jedi, the books stop making sense within 10 years of rotj.

Moreover, should the next book continue the current e.u., or the force awakens? Alternate time line in star trek, alternate story line in Star Wars... Don't give a Damn if abrams is best director ever (Not even close), why can't he make a great movie without ignoring everything else about the franchise?
