This Friday Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace turns eighteen years old, but before we can celebrate this incredible milestone we must take a moment to honor someone who helped make the film as great as it is.

Earlier this month it was reported that Margaret Towner, who is best know for portraying Jira in The Phantom Menace, had sadly passed away on April 10th at the age of 96. Jira was a friend to future Jedi and Sith Lord Anakin Skywalker(Jake Lloyd) and shared a scene with him, along with Qui-Gon(Liam Neeson), Padmé(Natalie Portman), and Jar Jar(Ahmed Best), in which she warns Anakin of an impending sandstorm. Jira also had an additional scene with Anakin later in the film that was ultimately cut.

The Stage posted her obituary which includes a brief overview of her incredible life. An excerpt from it reads:

"In 1997, she had travelled to Bray Studios to be interviewed by George Lucas (whom she admitted she’d never heard of) for the part of Jira in The Phantom Menace. The result led to Star Wars conventions across the country and fans requesting ‘selfies’ on the doorstep of her Victorian terraced house in Twickenham – once the home to Ringo Starr in the Beatles’ 1965 film Help."

On behalf of all of us at the SWU, I want to extend our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Margaret Towner. The Force will be with her... always.
