Two people making their big Star Wars debut this year are The Last Jedi star Laura Dern and director Rian Johnson. Johnson took the sequel trilogy baton from JJ Abrams and will soon be passing it off to Colin Trevorrow, but not without leaving his mark on the Star Wars galaxy. One of of his decisions was to cast Dern, best known for her role in Jurassic Park as a new character in the film.
Speaking with LA Weekly, as part of a feature on Dern, Johnson had high praise for his star, telling them,
"[Working with Dern on the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi] was like two indie kids getting away with something. We kept catching eyes, like, 'Are they really letting us do this?'
When
you're around her, it's like sunlight. I'm sure
you're getting a lot of people who've worked with her struggling to put
it into words. I'm trying to describe it without being too cheesy. She's
a force. She definitely has the Force."
Johnson also explained why he cast Dern in the role, saying,
"I just thought she was the coolest person on the planet since I saw Blue Velvet. It hit me right between the eyes, that shot of her coming out of the shadows — oh my God, that film."
While Dern's role is still a mystery, and likely will remain that way for a few months yet, it's always nice to see Star Wars cast and crew excited to be working together.
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December
15th. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Mark
Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, and Laura Dern.
