George Lucas received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award at the 64th Academy Awards. 

The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award is awarded to "Creative producers, whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality of motion picture production." 


The award is named for Irving Thalberg, the former head of the Production Division of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, who developed the company's stature for sophisticated films.

This is why the trophy itself is a bust of Thalberg rather than the recognisable "Oscar" statuette. 

Steven Spielberg presented the award to George Lucas and you can watch Lucas' acceptance speech down below:
