Prior to the casting of Alden Ehrenreich in the upcoming young Han Solo film, the short list for the role was leaked to the press. In addition to Ehrenreich, the list included Kingsmen: The Secret Service star Taron Egerton and Transformers: Age of Extinction star Jack Reynor. Now, months after losing out on the part, Reynor revealed to the Irish Times that he's relieved that he didn't get the part.
He spoke about the pressures that come with playing Han, saying,
“That Han Solo movie is going to be really tough. I think the guy who is doing it is a really good actor, but, for myself, I was afraid of it. I kept thinking: if you f**k this up you’ll ruin people’s childhoods. If it doesn’t turn out great, you won’t be forgiven. That’s a lot of responsibility. And even if it goes great, you’ll do it, people will know you only from that and that defines your career. That would be very difficult. For me, working on original material is very important.”
It's a fair concern for any actor to have before taking on a role in any established franchise, let alone a franchise as popular as Star Wars and a role as beloved as Han Solo.
The untitled young Han Solo film hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Thandie Newton (Westworld), and Michael K. Williams (The Wire). The film is directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie), with a script by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon (The First Time).
