EA Confirms Multiple Eras, Single Player Campaign For 'Battlefront' Sequel

Electronic Arts held their quarterly earnings call yesterday, updating investors on how the company has been doing and what their plans are going forward.  This included updates on many of their games in production, including their sequel to 2015's Star Wars Battlefront.  During the Battlefront update, EA announced that the game would include two of the most requested aspects that were omitted from the first game: single player campaign and multiple eras.  According to the prepared statements from the call,

"We’re thrilled to bring a new Star Wars Battlefront game to fans worldwide in the 2017 holiday season. In the past two years, Rogue One and The Force Awakens have opened new storylines and captured the imagination of hundreds of millions of Star Wars fans. We’ve listened closely to our passionate Star Wars Battlefront community, and expanded our existing game with more great content and experiences since its launch.  As that game continues to thrive, we have also heard our players’ desire for even more depth and progression. Our next Star Wars Battlefront will be even bigger, taking players into more locations, and allowing them to play with more heroes and characters across multiple Star Wars eras. There will be new ways to play, including an all-new single-player campaign, and much, much more that we are excited to share with our players in the months ahead. To build a game of this magnitude, we’ve brought together three great studios – DICE, Motive, and Criterion – and aligned their areas of expertise to deliver an amazing experience in the next Star Wars Battlefront"

This is good news for fans who felt the first game lacked the depth of previous Battlefront games.  The inclusion of a single player campaign gives the game a greater significance withing the Star Wars canon.  As for the inclusion of multiple eras, it seems likely that EA will include content from the sequel trilogy era (specifically The Force Awakens) in addition to content from the Original Trilogy.  Given the game's fall release date, it also seems possible that content from The Last Jedi could be included.  As for fans hoping that this will include the prequel era, specifically the Clone Wars, I'm less optimistic.  Not including that era in the first game spoke volumes about EA's interest in playing in that era.  It's likely that their decision to expand the game to multiple eras is limited to eras where new movies are coming out.

The Star Wars Battlefront sequel is slated for a fall 2017 release!
