@Zac_dfw

We have a Battlefront trailer!

The long-anticipated wait for the Star Wars Battlefront II trailer is over, as it has found its way to the World Wide Web tonight, and it looks awesome! Only :30 in length, the video shows new gameplay footage, and introduces a new, unnamed character who recalls:

"I still remember my last orders - the day the REAL war began."

Catch the video here:

Highlight captions in the video include:

'The Untold Soldier's Story' (Probably a new story mode)

'Fight Multiplayer Battles' (Possibly LAN or same-system multiplayer)

'Across All Eras' (We can assume this means Original Trilogy, Prequel Trilogy [Darth Maul vs. Yoda in the trailer], and Sequel Trilogy as more releases)

Sounds like the exciting expansion we've all been waiting for! What are your thoughts?

Special thanks to Eric Wall Jr. for drawing this to our attention. His podcast Backyard Watch premiers on channel1138.com on Monday, April 17.

EA's Star Wars panel happened earlier today at Star Wars Celebration Europe and a lot of Star Wars gaming news dropped there. The panel was attended by a number of game developers, including DICE's Design Director Niklas Fegreaus, and one of the biggest reveals was news related to Star Wars Battlefront's Death Star expansion.

A short teaser trailer for the DLC was revealed which shows off gameplay both just above the surface of the Death Star and out in space surrounding the super weapon. Space combat is something fans have been begging for since the initial release of Battlefront, so this is very exciting to see. You can check out the trailer below:

In addition, it was also announced that the bounty hunter Bossk and the mighty Wookiee Chewbacca are being added as playable hero characters. They also confirm that there will be multi-stage gameplay and, as shown in the trailer, you will be able to recreate the iconic climax of A New Hope and fly through the Death Star's trench. New vehicles, blasters and star cards are also promised to be on the way.

Keep an eye on the SWU for more news from this panel and others as the weekend rolls on!

Opinion: Breaking Down the 'EA Star Wars: A Look Ahead' Video

By: Dominic Jones

Earlier today EA held their annual press conference in advance of the E3 video game convention which takes place this week in Los Angeles.  During the conference a video previewing the upcoming Star Wars content was shown to fans in attendance and those watching the live stream.  While there weren't any major reveals like we were hoping for, we did get some quick looks and exciting teases at what's to come from the games.  If you haven't seen the video yet, be sure to check it out here first.  I'll be breaking down what we learned from the video about the future of Star Wars gaming below,

Star Wars Battlefront
There are still three more expansion packs from the first installment in the rebooted franchise to be release, with the Bespin expansion coming early next month, the Death Star expansion coming in the fall, and a still to be revealed expansion coming in early 2017.  On top of that there is a sequel in the works that will be released later in 2017.  During the video, there is lots of talk from the teams at DICE (who designed the first game) and Motive (who are working with DICE on the sequel) about bringing fans into the Star Wars galaxy like never before as well as bringing new characters, planets, and eras into the game.  No word on adding story, but EA GM Jade Raymond did mention that they had listened to what fans wanted when developing the sequel.  Hopefully that's a good sign.  Now, on to what they actually featured in the video.

Well hello, what have we got here?
We got a quick look at the Bespin expansion of the game, including Lando (who will be a playable hero in the expansion) and a couple of new locations.  There's no denying Battlefront is a beautiful game, let's just hope they have the content to back it up.

We also got a very quick look at some early work being done on the Death Star expansion.  It looks as if fans will be able to play the famous trench run from A New Hope, which is pretty exciting.  I'm still holding out hope that they will be able to work some content from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, hitting theaters this December, into the Death Star expansion.  If not main characters, then perhaps some of the new stormtrooper designs?  I'm not optimistic, but I can dream right?

Then there's this quick shot that appears to be either from the final expansion or the sequel.  It appears that the Trandoshan bounty hunter Bossk (seen in The Empire Strikes Back and The Clone Wars) will be a playable character in a future Battlefront release.

Respawn Entertainment
No actual footage from Respawn's recently announced Star Wars game was shown, however we did see two actors dressed in motion capture suits fighting with lightsabers.  Raymond did mention during the presentation that this was set in a "different" Star Wars era and that the games was a third person action adventure.  Given that--as we'll discuss momentarily--Visceral's game appears to be set in the Original Trilogy era, it sounds as though Respawn's game will find itself in the sequel or prequel era (my money is on sequel era, given EA's history with Battlefront).

Untitled Visceral Star Wars Game
This is where things get a bit more exciting.  While no title or details about the game were revealed we did get a look at some concept art and hear from the game's creative lead Amy Henning, who is apparently working with the Lucasfilm Story Group on creating the story for this upcoming game.  I was also pleased to see that Doug Chiang worked on this game too.  Chiang worked on the prequels and The Force Awakens as a concept artist, and is someone I am very glad is helping shape Star Wars going forward.  Now, onto what we saw,

The game appears to be set in the Original Trilogy era, or not too long before it, based on the ship designs and the Imperial logos seen in the footage above.  It also appears to take place, in part at least, on Tatooine (the presence of the twin suns in the background of the concept art suggests that it is Tatooine and not, say, Jakku).  Speaking of the concept art, those appear to be Imperial agents in the foreground.  The helmets they are wearing resemble that worn by Agent Kallus on Star Wars Rebels, which suggests to me that we might be seeing Imperial Security Bureau (ISB) Agents in the game.

The character seen in the footage appears to be the hero of the game.  There were reports last year that Visceral's game would center around Han Solo (which would make sense given that Phil Lord and Chris Miller's Han Solo Anthology film is also slated for a 2018 release), however this seems unlikely now.  Granted, this could be a placeholder character used in this preview to hide a later reveal about Han Solo.  However, given the Imperial presence on Tatooine, I would guess that this game takes place after Han, Luke, Chewie, Obi-Wan, and the droids blast their way out of Mos Eisley.  We don't get the sense in A New Hope that the Empire pays much attention to Tatooine before Leia drops Threepio and Artoo off with the Death Star plans.  After an embarrassment like that, it would make sense for the Empire to tighten its grip on the planet to ensure they aren't seen as weak by the locals.

Finally, we also got a quick look at one of the developers computer screens that showed an early rendering of a TIE fighter in another environment in the game.  The location doesn't scream Tatooine to me (I actually get a bit of a Naboo vibe from it), but it's too early to tell for sure.

Star Wars: The Old Republic and Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes were both also featured in the video, however there wasn't enough new content from them to merit in depth analysis.  Both games are already available and their presence in the video appeared to just show off what we already knew they could do.

There certainly was some interesting stuff shown off by EA when it comes to Star Wars, however they lacked the mind-blowing announcement or trailer that E3 is known for.  With Star Wars Battlefront already on the market and no new games coming out this year, EA is in a weird place with what they can actually show us.  In some way it feels like EA is stuck in 2013 when it comes to Star Wars.  There is lots of talk about an exciting future but they never showed anything of substance.  There's always a chance that they're saving the really cool announcement for Star Wars Celebration next month in London, but typically E3 has been the place where big Star Wars gaming announcements are made and Celebration is for more niche reveals.

EA Gives Update on 'Star Wars' Video Games at E3 Press Conference

By: Dominic Jones

The Electronic Arts press conference took place this afternoon in advance of the E3 video game convention taking place this week in Los Angeles.  As part of their presentation, EA made several Star Wars announcements relating to upcoming content from Star Wars Battlefront as well as new games coming out soon.  EA's Jade Raymond announced that Motive would be joining DICE on the sequel to Star Wars Battlefront to include new content from the new films.  She announced that Respawn would be exploring a "new era" of Star Wars in their game.

A video preview for the upcoming games was also shown at the event.  Concept art and early in game content from Visceral's game was shown.  It also confirmed that legendary Star Wars concept artist Doug Chiang would be working on the game.  The video also showed the team at Respawn working with motion capture technology on lightsaber battles.  Meanwhile the team's at DICE and Motive spoke about what was upcoming.  Previews for upcoming content for The Old Republic and Galaxy of Heroes were shown.

Check out the video below,

While what we got certainly is cool (I'm very intrigued by what we saw of the Visceral game), the lack of any solid announcements about what's to come either in terms of new games or Battlefront  sequels was disappointing.  Hopefully, they're saving the announcements for Star Wars Celebration next month in London (where it has been announced that Star Wars gaming will have a large presence).

Let us know what you thought of the Star Wars updates in the comments below!

New Key Art & Details About Star Wars Battlefront's Bespin Expansion

By: Benjamin Hart

If Star Wars Battlefront players aren't excited, they should be. A much anticipated planet, along with some beloved characters, are finally being added to the game in an upcoming DLC. Next month the Bespin expansion will allow players battle above gas giant and in and around Cloud City while utilizing new characters, vehicles and weapons. The Twin-Pod Cloud Car will be a flyable ship and Lando Calrissian and Dengar will be included as new hero and villain characters, respectively. You will be able to visit many locations on Cloud City such as the Administrator’s Palace, Bioniip Laboratories and the iconic carbon-freezing chambers. New weapons include the X-8 Night Sniper, EE-4 blaster and Dengar's DLT-19 heavy blaster. While Dengar will rely on his weapon, Lando's most valuable trait is said to be "knowing the odds and using tricks against his enemies".

The Bespin expansion will be available to all starting July 5th, but will be available two weeks early on June 21st exclusively for season pass holders. You can get more information and photos by visiting the official Battlefront site.

'Star Wars Battlefront 3: Galaxy in Turmoil' Fan Remake Approved for Steam Release

By: Dominic Jones

When EA's Star Wars Battlefront was released last year to huge financial success, it was the end of long road in the continuation of the Star Wars Battlefront series.  Fans had been crying out for a sequel to 2005's Star Wars Battlefront II and, while it took until 2015 for the series to be continued (and rebooted), there were several attempts to get a sequel made in the interim years.  One such attempt was by the studio Free Radical, footage of which leaked back in 2008 (though it has since been removed).  Though the game was ultimately cancelled, the studio Front Wire took on the challenge of finishing the game (there were varying reports of how finished the game was prior to it's cancellation).

Today, Front Wire announced today that their remake of Free Radical's Star Wars Battlefront III, titled Galaxy in Turmoil, had been approved for free release for fans on Steam (the online gaming platform).  No word yet on when the game will actually be released, but it seems that it is imminent.

Front Wire Studios president Tony "Fergie" Romanelli said in a statement today,
It is with great pleasure that as of today I am able to officially announce that Frontwire Studios has officially signed a distribution deal with Steam/Valve for the game Galaxy in Turmoil. After ongoing discussion between Valve Representatives and myself, Valve/Steam has agreed to ship Galaxy in Turmoil to it’s millions of users for FREE.

While this is undoubtedly a big step and accomplishment for Frontwire Studios itself, it’s an even bigger step for you, the community. By Steam agreeing to ship Galaxy in Turmoil we are not only adding more validation and awareness to the project by opening up the game to a whole new audience, we’re also cementing Frontwire Studios’ reputation as an up and coming developer with the opportunity to now publish our games on Steam in the future. This will help us ultimately achieve our goal of making the games that you, the community want.

On a final note; People have been expressed their concern as of late, saying they expect us to get a Cease & Desist from Disney. I’ll be honest – I’ve had mild concerns myself from time to time. However Valve clearly lacks that same concern. By agreeing to publish Galaxy in Turmoil, Valve is assisting us in growing and ensuring the longevity of the Galaxy in Turmoil project and community as a whole.

As for what to expect from the game, Front Wire revealed many details during a recent live stream about the game.  Here's a breakdown (via Gamespot) of what was learned from the stream,
  • Game runs on Unreal Engine 4
  • Undecided about split-screen.
  • Don't expect it on Steam, since it's an unlicensed game.
  • Game is in pre-alpha currently; all plans are subject to change.
  • All classic Battlefront game modes will be available, while Frontwire is creating a new mode designed around competitive play.
  • Matches will be 32v32 players; AI will fill in for players who drop out mid-match.
  • Will include original Battlefront III maps and some new ones.
  • Support for Battlefield II maps it to be determined; could be added as DLC.
  • Development won't end at 1.0 release; more content will be added later.
  • Will include multiplayer because "it's not Battlefront without multiplayer."
  • Mod support could come after launch.
  • Developers are looking at all eras of Star Wars; fans can add their own content with mods.
  • No Star Cards like DICE's new Battlefront.
  • There will be pickups for things like health packs and ammo drops.
  • No health generation.
  • Aims to be faithful to the original Battlefront games.
  • Some maps have a day/night cycle.
  • Frontwire hopes to make a new IP after releasing Galaxy in Turmoil.
All of this sounds very exciting for Star Wars fans and gamers, though I remain skeptical about whether Lucasfilm/Disney will allow the game to be released (though hopefully the fact that its free will help its chances).  Regardless, I can't help but admire the work and dedication put into this by the Front Wire Studios team.

EA Reveals Why 'Star Wars Battlefront' Did Not Have A Single-Player Campaign

By: Benjamin Hart

Star Wars Battlefront has been making headlines recently with the news that EA plans to release a sequel to the game next year. This has, of course, stirred up a lot of discussion from both fans and developers in regards to the first game, which was released last November. While Battlefront was a financial success, selling 14 million copies overall, critically it did not do so well, garnering mixed reviews and a variety of complaints from players. The general consensus among fans has seemed to point to the lack of a a single-player campaign mode as one of the biggest things missing from the game. Even Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega inquired about it. With Star Wars Battlefront II on the horizon, many fans are left wondering what went wrong and what they can expect from the second game.

Gamespot reports that EA's executive vice president Patrick Söderlund spoke at a recent Investor's Day event and addressed the controversy surrounding the single-player campaign:

"The one thing that we got criticized for was the lack of a single-player campaign. It was conscious decision we made due to time and being able to launch the game side-by-side with the movie that came out to get the strongest possible impact. I think the team created a really good game based on the premise that we had. I would say the game has done very well for us and reached a very different demographic than a traditional EA game. So from that perspective, it's a success. Are we happy with the 75 rating? No. Is that something we're going to cure going forward? Absolutely."

Söderlund refers to Gamespot's sister-site Metacritic's review of Battlefront, which gave it a 75 rating. He continues to say that they are look to correct these issues going forward, adding more "depth and breadth" to future games:

"The depth and breadth is something that's proving to be more and more important. In a world where we want $60 up front and we expect people to stay with us over the course of a long time, the depth of what we offer is important.... We have to go back and course correct that for another version if we were ever to build one,"

It's encouraging to hear that EA is listening to fans and will be working to give fans more content and hopefully make a more crowd pleasing game. Star Wars Battlefront II is reportedly set for release sometime next year, and EA plans to release more games every following year. We will undoubtedly learn more at Star Wars Celebration Europe in London this July.
