The promotion for Star Wars Episode VIII will begin in force in the spring (probably around April), but director Rian Johnson has begun dropping a few hints and teases about the upcoming film. Johnson spoke with USA Today recently and spoke about how he approached writing the characters in the sequel, specifically how Rey feels when she approaches Luke Skywalker. He also revealed that he does have a title for Episode VIII, and he's had it since the first draft of the script, but he's not ready to tell anyone just yet.
Johnson described how Rey feels as she approaches Luke Skywalker for the first time at the end of The Force Awakens/beginning of Episode VIII, saying Rey approached Luke, "both not knowing what’s going to happen and also having a lot of expectations in her head about how this is going to go." That sounds like how a lot fans feel about hearing Luke Skywalker speak for the first time since 1983.
He also described what his process was for writing the characters, saying,
"I wanted to know more about each of them, and that doesn’t just mean
information or backstory. Figure out what’s the most
difficult thing each of them could be challenged with now — let’s throw
that at them and dig into what really makes them tick by seeing how they
handle that."
Star Wars Episode VIII hits theaters on December 15th, 2017 and
stars Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, John Boyega, and Carrie
Fisher. The film is directed by Rian Johnson.
