EW Reveals Bios Of 'Rogue One' Alien Characters

By Ciaran Duggan,

Yesterday EW, which is fast becoming renowned as an unofficial mouthpiece of Lucasfilm, has disclosed the biography of two alien characters who will be fighting alongside the Rebels in Rogue One. These characters were briefly introduced to us last Friday, in the Rogue One sizzler reel, at Star Wars Celebration in London.

Gareth Edwards insisted that the task of choosing creature and alien designs for the film was far more laborious than initially anticipated.

G. Edwards:  It wasn't like, 'We've got this character, we need to design a creature for it, and here's what the creature's like. It was more like we told the creature department to come up with a thousand ideas, and then it was like casting the movie. There were walls and walls of these different types of characters that we could've picked from. We went through them like 'God, he's fascinating...Who's that...? And she looks amazing...! And what's that there? Slowly we got it down to our top hundred, and then it got even more refined.

So who are these two new alien characters? (Contrary to rumors and gossip among fans, these two aliens will not be nicknamed "Space Monkey" and "Bigmouth").

Pao
EW has described Pao as a 'platoon leader'. In essence, it seems Pao will be equivalent to a junior officer, who holds command over a garrison of troops. I estimate that Pao's role will be similar to a Commander Cody or Captain Rex. This is not to say that Pao's personality will be modeled on the two former clone commanders of the Clone Wars however, as Gareth Edwards points out.

Gareth Edwards: There was this great design of this creature that's mouth would open really wide, and he looked like he was really good at giving orders and shouting at people during a battle. I was like, 'We've got to give him that moment in the film,' and so [Pao] was born out of that

Bistan
EW has informed us about another alien character is called: Bistan. Although he may look like a Wookie, Pablo refuted this claim and stated on the latest installment of The Star Wars Show that he is a Lakaru (a new species). He has been described by EW writer Anthony Breznican as the gunner of the new Rebel ship named the 'U-wing'. The U-Wing is seen as a combination of a gunship and troop transport. Going back to the Clone Wars references, I could see Bistan representing the Rebels' version of brazen and confident clone troopers like Hardcase and Hevy. For instance, Bistan seems to view war as a 'game' and more 'fun' than other characters would, as detected with the cackling laughter Bistan makes whilst shooting down soldiers of the Empire.

Gareth Edwards: It's not necessarily a character that we get to know, but I think he has a very memorable, iconic look. Bistan is one of my favorites. I can't give away what happens to him.

Edwards is keeping us very much in the dark about this character. It makes me wonder whether these alien characters will have a significant role in the film or they will just be involved in one or two important moments in the film. We will find out when this film hits theatres on December 16th.
