John Williams Jokes About Possibly Scoring 'Episode VIII'

We recently learned that filming for Star Wars: Episode VIII had reached a mid-way point, which means it won't be long until the film goes into post-production. One of the key components of the post-production of any Star Wars film is the scoring of the music. It is still unknown who will provide the music for Episode VIII, but, of course, legendary composer John Williams is the fan favorite choice. Williams is in mid 80's now which has lead to speculation that the Academy Award winner could be retiring sometime soon.

A member in the John Williams Fan Network forum(via Making Star Wars) reported that while conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra at a recent event, Williams briefly joked about the possibility of returning to to score Episode VIII:

"When he took the stage, and before he started conducting the Scherzo, he said "I told the producers I wasn't sure if I wanted to do the next one, but told them I didn't want anyone else doing it either."  It was certainly meant as a joke, and got a great laugh."

It sounds like Williams is a bit conflicted about giving up the reigns to the Saga's music just yet. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is due for release on December 16th, will be the first John Williams-less live action Star Wars film, being that it will be scored by Alexandre Desplat. Hopefully Williams will indeed be back for Episode VIII, but if not, that film will be the first among the numbered episodes to venture into new territory without him.

Which composer would you like to see eventually carry on creating Star Wars music after John Williams retires? Let us know your though in the comments below!

Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on December 15th, 2017!
