Ever since Laura Dern (Jurassic Park, Rambling Rose) was cast in Star Wars Episode VIII there has been lots of speculation about who she might be playing. And while we don't know definitively, we may have our first bit of insight into her character. Latino Review posted a description of a scene from Episode VIII involving Dern's character, which gives us an idea of who here character is and what she may be doing in the film. As usual, there is a chance this may not be true but, if you are trying to avoid all Star Wars Episode VIII spoilers then stop reading now. This is you SPOILER ALERT!

According to Latino Review,
"There’s a stage setup like the interior of a starship. I don’t know what kind of starship, but it is large enough to have a crew and lots of droids manning it. The set has a bunch of practical effect robots and “hairy” alien creatures on it, and given that The First Order seems to be keeping up with the “humans only” hiring policy of The Empire, that suggests it is not a First Order ship to me.
In one of the scenes shot in this stage, a rag-tag group of Resistance fighters have seen some battle. Cut and bruised, they and Poe Dameron are on this ship when Laura Dern, playing some sort of captain or officer. She tells the fighters that they are the last of the rebellion/resistance (I’m unclear on the exact phrasing of the line, so no capitalizing the Resistance) and that Princess Leia has been gravely injured and is receiving medical attention.
Oscar Isaac and Laura Dern have an antagonistic exchange of words and Dern’s character is blunt with Poe, like she has some sort of authority over him.
Things must be tense between these two characters because another scene we’ve gotten wind of has Poe leading a group of Resistance fighters as they take over what is presumably Dern’s ship. The scene included fighters under Poe removing technicians from their computer stations and Poe pointing a blaster at Dern’s character."
So, based on that, it sounds like Dern is playing some sort of military officer in the Resistance (or maybe the Republic). I love the idea of seeing some tension among the good guys and the idea of Poe leading a mutiny of sorts is very intriguing. While it doesn't completely kill the rumor, this does suggest to me that Dern is probably not playing Rey's mother/Luke's wife. (Also, I think the bit about the First Order having a "humans only policy" is just speculation by the LR writer, since it doesn't really make sense. Why would the First Order have a no aliens policy when their Supreme Leader is an alien?)
As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
