Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been breaking records left and right since being released on December 18th, and now is about overcome one more Titanic record(pun intended). According to a recent report by Comicbook.com, The Force Awakens earned $22.9 million on New Years Eve, bringing it's total domestic box office earnings to $651.9 million. This means there is little doubt that before today is done it will have not only surpassed Jurassic World, which stands at 3rd place at $652.3 million overall, but also Titanic's record of $658.7 million that was set back in 1997. Thus, The Force Awakens will take Titanic's place as the 2nd highest grossing film of all time in the domestic box office.
The Force Awakens is also moving up the worldwide box office chart, currently in eighth place grossing $1.29 billion, a position previously held by Frozen.
Now the biggest question on people's minds is; when will it surpass Avatar? James Cameron's sci-fi epic has held the top spot on domestic($760.5 million) and worldwide($2.78 billion) charts since it's release in 2009. Now it seems we may be mere days away from The Force Awakens dethroning Avatar domestically, and soon after worldwide. We shall watch this film's box office earnings with great interest.
