JJ Abrams Reveals the Inspiration for The First Order

Empire Magazine has released a short snippet from their upcoming piece on Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens online.  The excerpt features director JJ Abrams revealing the real world inspiration behind The First Order, the main bad guys in the new film.  According to Abrams,

"That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again?  What could be born of that? Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire? Could the work of The Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?"

It sounds as though The First Order may have very few connections back to the Empire seen in the Original Trilogy, and sounds more like something new that was formed in the years since Return of the Jedi.  In other words, The First order is not just a re-branding of the Empire, but it's own thing entirely.  And the Nazi inspiration makes sense too.  Fans have already drawn comparisons between the scenes of the First Order troops massing to the imagery from Nazi rallies.

As for the perceived leader of The First Order, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Abrams revealed a few more small details, mostly clarifying things we'd already heard before.  Abrams said, "Kylo Ren is not a Sith.  He works under Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force."

Abrams had previously revealed that Kylo got his name after being part of the mysterious Knights of Ren.   When that news got out, most assumed that this meant he was not a Sith buy it's still nice to get a confirmation.  I believe this is also our first official confirmation that Andy Serkis' Supreme Leader Snoke is Dark Side user.  This had been rumored and assumed by fans, but never actually confirmed until now.

The entire interview with JJ Abrams can be found in the August 27th issue of Empire Magazine, which features two The Force Awakens covers!

Nazi this, Nazi that. Nazi, Nazi, Nazi. Look, I'm sure it's a good idea, and I'll probably see the movie, and we ALLLL know Hitler is everyone's favorite villain...but it's a good idea that's been pounded to death. Ya know how everyone is sick of the "Arrow in the knee" Skyrim jokes? Yeah, I'm kind of tired for the bad guys to be mainly based off Nazis. I mean, the Galactic Empire originally was based on the Axis Powers (mainly 3rd Reich), Soviet Union, Imperial Britian, and Ancient Rome. He's not doing anything new, in that regard. It can still be good, I'm sure it will be. Nothing is new under the sun-but we could use a little more variety.

See, I think that's actually an interesting theory, and not something that's been overdone...he's not saying they're like Nazi Germany in their prime, but like the remainder of what was Nazi Germany after being broken and defeated and forced to go into hiding, which is pretty much exactly what I think most people assumed the First Order was, the Imperial leftovers that tucked their tails between their legs and ran instead of being killed in battle or arrested...also I have no idea what a "arrow in the knee" joke is, so maybe it's only people who get that that think any Nazi comparison is overdone...

And I actually have to disagree with you on "It sounds as though The First Order may have very few connections back to the Empire seen in the Original Trilogy," Dominic; I think he's saying they're a group that spawned directly from the Original Trilogy Empire...think of it this way: read "what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again," but replace "Nazis" with "Imperials" and "Argentina" with "an ice planet" (I don't think we know what planet Starkiller is on yet, right?)...granted, by the time of TFA, it'll be mostly a different set of individuals, but they'll be individuals that were raised and trained by people who were devoted members of the Empire before the fall that got together to create a new group in the Empire's image to hopefully one day bring back what they thought were the golden years of Imperial rule...anyway, long story short (not really), I wouldn't call it a "re-branding of the Empire" exactly, but it's closer to that than an entirely different, unrelated group...

Just watch the film first and then have an opinion...

Episode VIII: The Knights of Ren does have a nice ring to it ...

I agree with Forrest: we will watch the movie; but this is why I don't like this new stuff: a strong female lead character and a black guy JUST BECAUSE "diversity is important to Disney and Lucasfilms" (K. Kennedy words), a very obvious reference to nazism (watch out: they are the "bad guys", here's murica to save the galaxy -yes, forget the other side of the former iron curtain-) in the plot (first order) and in the film aesthetics (remember when the costume designer said that the inspiration of first order costumes and armor and enviroment came from the nazi -and Apple- style???)... come on, what are we doing here, put a girl or a black guy in an important role because the plot and because this is how you picture the galaxy far far away or because any film and casting reason, like Leia and Lando... or the fcking Ackbar. This is now a more weak political film.

yeah, i agree to an extent: why the nazi connection AGAIN? i know hollywood has a hard on for vilifying hitler and nazi germany in every film possible... as though they were the worst to ever exist lol... but what makes it totally nonsense is that there have been countless examples (if you absolutely CANNOT come up with a novel concept) of the fall out following an imperial collapse from which to base the new trilogy on if you absolutely MUST do so. why couldn't the remnants of the empire resemble more of the fragments of the fall of the roman empire?

that said, let's see if they were smart enough to have made the 1st order observe a significantly different philosophy on social order than the empire did making the 1st order really nothing like the empire at all; like the natural evolution from a post-imperial meltdown and the result of a power vacuum. that would be very refreshing.

it's possible disney ditches its routine GOOD v. EVIL black n white song and dance for a more greyscale interpretation of right and wrong. after all, both phasma and hux seem prime prospects for "meh, not so baddie" baddies and we already know kylo is likely a solo lol

or disney makes them all evil and nazi-ish lol
