Last week Lucasfilm announced a new novel coming from Del Rey Publishing titled Star Wars: Aftermath that would be part of the "Journey to The Force Awakens" line of books and comics coming from various publishers. After that we learned that Aftermath would be written by Chuck Wendig. Today, Jennifer Heddle, Senior Editor at Lucasbooks confirmed Wendig as the author, revealed the cover (below), and made one more revelation about the book. According to Heddle's blog post, "Aftermath will be the first book in a trilogy that begins to bridge the Star Wars timeline between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens."
About Aftermath's connections with The Force Awakens Heddle wrote,
"Obviously I wish I could tell you more about the story, but I can’t just
yet. What I can reveal is that you will be introduced to a sweeping new
cast of characters, along with a fan favorite from the films. And who
knows what other familiar faces will pop up along the way? And once
you’ve seen The Force Awakens in movie theaters, you may find that certain names and places in Aftermath have a relevance you never knew–so keep your eyes wide open!"
The big question now is, when is the next novel in this trilogy due for release? Aftermath is expected to hit shelves on September 4th, 2015 and some are pointing out that there is still one more release date Del Rey has claimed for a Star Wars book in November 2015 and that it could be a potential release date for the sequel. I have my doubts about that. It seems like a very fast turn around time, especially if Wendig is writing all three books (though it should be noted that it has never been sated that he will). It would however, make more sense if they aren't using trilogy in the traditional sense and meaning something more along the lines three novels set in this era that are loosely connected.
Regardless, I can't wait to pick up Star Wars: Aftermath when it comes out on September 4th, 2015.
