It's always a pleasure to hear from a Jedi! Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, has been making the rounds recently to promote his latest movie Kingsman: The Secret Service, and while talking to the L.A Times' Hero Complex the conversation, of course, drifted to Mark's next movie, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. We've heard Mark speak about the film several times recently, discussing his experiences on set and the massive amount of security surrounding Episode VII. This time, however, he had a message to fans who may be a bit too excited for the next installment in the Saga:
"I wish people would just relax. We’re not trying to play games with people. We just want to maximize their experience at the movies where it should be seen and not have it leaked over the Internet. Believe me, it will be here before you know it. Forget about it, that’s my advice. Look forward to all the summer movies. I’m telling you, it’s just a movie. These people that build it up in their minds like it’s going to be the second coming of, I don’t know what — they’re bound to be disappointed."
He then continues, discussing the different generations involved in the production:
"It’s exciting from the standpoint that it’s the first of the movies in that universe that’s conceived and directed by the fan generation. We’ve never had that before. Now, Larry Kasdan is one of the old-timers like us, but the captain of the ship is J.J. Abrams and he was a fan of the series, which I find very interesting. They’re going to have an input into how things are done in a way that was impossible in the more autonomous period of George’s [Lucas] reign. I hope it’s a hit!"
While it's hard to not to be incredibly excited about The Force Awakens, Mark's overall message is something we could learn from. Many fans ended up disappointed with The Phantom Menace back in 1999 because, admittedly, sixteen years of speculation and exceptions were hard, if not impossible to overcome. Now it seems a lot of fans may be doing the same for this film. It's fine to expect a good movie, but walking into the theater expecting to see the "best move ever", or something better than The Empire Strikes Back is a bit... much. Could it be the best Star Wars film? Or the worst? We don't know yet, so it's best to keep an open mind until we all see it on December 18th.
