The latest Lego Star Wars TV specials have been announced. The Hollywood Reporter revealed today that Disney XD had picked up a five episode mini-series titled LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales. The series will be set after the events of Return of the Jedi and will feature C-3PO and R2-D2 looking back on lives together since The Phantom Menace. The show will retell the story of the Star Wars saga from the perspective of the droids.
According to THR,
Set after the Rebel Alliance victory on Endor seen at the end of Return of the Jedi,
the droids are regaling the assembled of their adventures that led them
to their present situation. An accidental kidnapping leads to a new
adventure that progresses to the re-telling of the saga in the
chronological order, starting from The Phantom Menace to Return of the Jedi.
No word yet on who is writing and/or directing the series. The release date is expect to be revealed in the coming months.
I will say I'm looking forward to this. I've enjoyed the past Lego Star Wars TV specials, and I expect these new ones will be of similar tone. I do question the logic of doing a comedy series so close to the release of The Force Awakens if Disney wants kids to understand the serious side of these characters not just the comedic style. It does seem to contradict their reasons for cancelling Detours back in 2013 (though that may be returning, rendering that point moot). Regardless, I look forward to seeing what Lucasfilm and Lego produce.
