Marvel has announced their fourth upcoming comic series for 2015, when they re-acquiring the Star Wars comic licence.  The series will be a prequel to the animated series Star Wars Rebels and the novel Star Wars: A New Dawn, and is written by Greg Weisman, who as an executive producer on season 1 of Rebels.  The first five issues of the ongoing series will feature art by Pepe Laraz (Deadpool vs. X-Force).  The series will debut in April.

I have to say,I'm very excited about this and I'm glad to see Marvel expanding beyond the Original Trilogy era.  Perhaps we'll get to see Kanan transition over the course of the series from the Padawan he was when Order 66 went down to the character we see in A New Dawn (this transition was hinted at in A New Dawn).

Update: Marvel.com has released an interview with Greg Weisman! Here's an excerpt:

"Marvel.com: How will STAR WARS – KANAN: THE LAST PADAWAN’s look into our hero’s past most impact his present?

Greg Weisman: Well, it’s more about informing his present rather than impacting it. But I think when you get this back story, you’ll see—especially as the television series continues into the recently announced season two—that it has a clear influence on his actions.  Beyond that: NO SPOILERS.

Marvel.com: What will we see are Kanan’s greatest needs in terms of training? And what’s his relationship like with his master, Depa Billaba?

Greg Weisman: We’ll see Kanan train to be a Jedi. And then we’ll see him train specifically not to be a Jedi anymore. His relationship with Master Billaba is warm and wry."

Be sure to read the interview in full on Marvel.com!
