David Fincher Met With Lucasfilm About Directing Episode VII

You'll meet very few people who will argue that JJ Abrams is the right man for job of directing Star Wars Episode VII.  But naturally, there was a process of finding the right director (long before plot rumors, or casting rumors, those were the stories that kept us guessing) and many met with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy about the job.  One such director was David Fincher (The Social Network, House of Cards, Fight Club).

Finched discussed the meeting recently in an interview with Total Film, saying, "I talked to Kathy about it, but I think that it's a different thing from... I don't know what Disney-Lucasfilm will be like."

He elaborated on his thoughts about the original trilogy saying,
"My favourite is The Empire Strikes Back. If I said, 'I want to do something more like that,' then I'm sure the people paying for it would be like, 'No! You can't do that! We want it like the other one with all the creatures!'

"I always thought of Star Wars as the story of two slaves [C-3PO and R2-D2] who go from owner to owner, witnessing their masters' folly, the ultimate folly of man... I thought it was an interesting idea in the first two, but it's kind of gone by Return Of The Jedi."

With so many new Star Wars films on the horizon, perhaps Fincher will get his chance to explore some of these ideas down the line.
